Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed of dog that is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. It is considered to be a designer breed, and was bred to combine the best qualities of both parent breeds. Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, loyal, and have a friendly disposition. They are generally low-shedding, so they are great for people with allergies. Bernedoodles enjoy a wide variety of activities, such as running, swimming, and playing fetch. They also respond very well to training and can easily learn basic as well as more advanced behaviors.
The Bernedoodle coat is known for being a combination of its parent breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. It is usually curly, wavy, or wiry and enhances its namesake by having white and black patches in the coat. The Bernedoodle's coat generally sheds minimally, making it the perfect companion for those who don't want to deal with pesky fur clean-up. The coat is also hypoallergenic, non-shedding, and low-maintenance, meaning it requires very little upkeep.
Bernedoodles are a unique breed in that they are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. As such, their dietary needs are going to vary depending on their size and activity level. Generally speaking, a Bernedoodle should be fed a balanced, high-quality diet that is rich in protein and healthy fats, as well as moderate amounts of carbohydrates. When selecting a food for your pup, look for products that contain real meats like Chicken, Fish or Lamb rather than generic “byproducts”.
Preparing for your new Bernedoodle involves a few steps. First, research their breed characteristics, dietary needs, and health requirements. Next, purchase food, bedding, a collar, toys, and other supplies your pup may need. Additionally, consider enrolling in obedience courses and setting aside time every day to work on training your pup. Make arrangements to have your home Cleaned and set up, if necessary.
Bernedoodles can range in size from tiny to very large. On average, a standard Bernedoodle stands 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 80 pounds when fully grown. The mini Bernedoodles can grow to 18 to 22 inches and weigh anywhere from 20 to 50 pounds. Generally, a toy Bernedoodle can reach a height of 12 to 17 inches and weigh an average of 10 to 24 pounds.
Bernedoodles need a moderate amount of exercise, about the same as any other large breed. They should receive regular daily activity to help keep them mentally and physically healthy and active. This includes regular walks (at least 15 minutes per day, though ideally up to 1 hour), obedience training, playing in the backyard, and fun activities like fetch or swimming. Exercise needs will vary based on a dog's age and health as well, and they should generally be limited to activities they enjoy and can handle.
Bernedoodles have many of the same great qualities that make them an excellent family dog. They are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, resulting in a loving, loyal, and affectionate animal. Bernedoodles tend to be intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. They are friendly with both adults, children, and other pets. Bernedoodles are also typically lowto non-shedding dogs, making them a good option for allergy sufferers.
Training a Bernedoodle is not much different than training any other dog and the steps are actually quite simple. Start by teaching him basic obedience commands such as "sit," "stay," "down" and "come." Once he can do that, work on obedience commands such as "leave it," "drop it" and come when called, even when distracted. Always use positive reinforcement and treats, and be consistent with training. Make sure to give him regular opportunities to practice his skills by going to classes or providing activities that help develop his social skills with people and other dogs.
