Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, combining the intelligence of the poodle with the loyal, fun-loving nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog. They are extremely smart and eager to learn, making them well-suited for obedience and sport training. Bernedoodles can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for too long, but they usually get along well with other animals and have very calm temperaments. They make great family pets, as they are patient and loyal companions.
Bernedoodles are hybrid dogs bred from two non-shedding parent breeds, the Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog. Because of this, they are typically considered low to non-shedding. However, it should be noted there is a chance Bernedoodles may have some light shedding. How much they shed depends largely on the breed of the Poodle parent and some other factors like coat texture.
Feeding a healthy and balanced diet to your Bernedoodle is important for their overall wellbeing. A great option for many Bernedoodles is a high-quality dry kibble that is specially formulated with the nutritional needs of large breed dogs in mind. Consider something that has named proteins, such as lamb or beef, as one of the first two ingredients along with some healthy fats and grains. Supplement their meals with fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and small amounts of fish or meat. Be mindful of their total caloric intake and handle treats appropriately.
Before bringing home your Bernedoodle, it's important to prepare your home for your new family member. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies such as food and water bowls, chew toys, and a comfortable bed. Take some time to puppy-proof your home by removing any potential hazards such as house plants, cords, and other items that can be easily reached by a curious puppy. Identify the areas where your puppy can and cannot go in your house and clearly mark the boundaries.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of sizes, from petite to extra large. The petite size usually stands at a maximum of 14 inches tall and can weigh up to 25 pounds. The small-medium size will average 16 inches tall and weigh about 30 to 45 pounds. The medium size typically stands between 17 and 20 inches tall and can weigh between 45 and 55 pounds. The large-medium Bernedoodle will measure up to 22 inches and challenge the scale between 55 and 70 pounds.
It is important to keep your Bernedoodle active with daily exercise and walking. The exact amount of time will depend on your individual pup and their lifestyle, but a good rule of thumb is to aim for at least 15 to 20 minutes of walking or exercise daily. If your Bernedoodle is a pup or high-energy adult you may want to increase the time to up to an hour to really give them the physical and mental stimulation they need. A combination of long walks and shorter ones, as well as playtime is typically the ideal.
Bernedoodles make excellent family dogs because of their intelligence and playful nature. They have a caring, loyal temperament which allows them to form strong attachments to their owners and anyone they come into contact with. Bernedoodles are also highly sociable, which means they love to be around people and other pets, making them a great addition to any family. They are extremely loyal, loving, and devoted, providing a great source of companionship and comfort. Their intelligence makes them easy to train and also allows them to easily pick up commands and obey them.
Training a Bernedoodle can be easy depending on the individual pup's personality and learning style. However, it's important to remember that it can also be a long process requiring consistent positive reinforcement and repetition, as with any breed. It's best to start off with simple commands such as sit and stay, and then build on those over time. Successful training requires consistency, dedication and patience from both you and your Bernedoodle. Be sure to give plenty of praise and rewards and the pup will soon understand the commands.
