Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a great choice if you're looking for a loyal companion dog. They are a mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, which makes them a hybrid breed. They have a strong build, with beautiful coats of black, brown, and white. They are known for being exceptionally intelligent, highly trainable, easily socialized, and eager to please. They love spending time with their families and require regular exercise and affection for maximum health and happiness. They typically have low-shedding coats, making them good for people with allergies.
Bernedoodles are often thought to be hypoallergenic breeds, but the truth is that there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. According to the American Kennel Club, fur and dander produced by any animal, including dogs, can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to it. However, experts believe some dogs may create less of an allergic reaction than others, and Bernedoodles may be one of them.
Bernedoodles do have a few special dietary needs when compared to other breeds. For starters, they tend to need more fat in their diets than other breeds, but they should still be closely monitored to ensure they're not eating too much as this could lead to obesity. Furthermore, they need a diet that contains high quantities of essential vitamins and minerals to keep them healthy and energized, such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and vitamins A and C. They may also benefit from a diet that is specially formulated for large breed dogs to support healthy growth and muscle health.
Researching the breed you're getting is a great first step to becoming the best puppy parent while you wait for your Bernedoodle. It's important to consider their exercise requirements, dietary needs, and general care. Educate yourself on the different stages of growth and development ahead, as each stage requires different levels of care. Additionally, start puppy-proofing your home and collecting the necessary supplies for your pup. This includes items for their basics needs like food and shelter, along with fun additions like toys and a bed.
Bernedoodles come in several different sizes and vary depending on the mix of their parents. Their size can range from toy, miniature, or standard, with the standard size reaching between 20-26 inches at the shoulder and about 50-90 pounds when fully grown. Some breeders breed for non-standard sizes, such as giant Bernedoodles, which can reach up to 36 inches in height and more than 100 pounds in weight. No matter the size, Bernedoodles still display their parent breeds' characteristic of being friendly, adaptable, and intelligent.
Your Bernedoodle's daily walking needs will depend on their age and individual activity level. Generally speaking, a Bernedoodle will need approximately 30-60 minutes of physical activity per day. This of course can be divided into multiple walks and/or playtimes, such as a mid-morning and afternoon walk lasting 15-30 minutes each, plus some additional playtime or a longer walk, depending on what your pup enjoys and is physically capable of. For young puppies under 4 months, shorter and less frequent walks are encouraged.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles make excellent family dogs, because they are highly intelligent, social, and affectionate. They are gentle and patient around children, often forming strong bonds with members of the household. Bernedoodles are also incredibly loyal and will do whatever it takes to protect their loved ones. Their unique coat sets them apart and is low to non-shedding, making grooming a breeze.
Training a Bernedoodle doesn't have to be difficult. Start by getting your pup comfortable with some basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Be positive, consistent, and patient when teaching. Reward your dog whenever they do something correctly with treats, toys, and verbal praise. Before introducing a new command, practice existing ones to ensure your dog is confident in performance. If you find your pup gets easily distracted, break apart the commands into smaller steps. Keep training sessions short, no more than 10 minutes. Avoid harsh corrections, as this can cause your dog to become frustrated and less responsive.
