Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a designer breed, mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle. They are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and loving personalities. They are perfect family pets as they are low shedding and enjoyed by everyone in the family due to their good-natured temperament.
The Bernedoodle coat has a unique appearance that combines the heritage of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. The Bernedoodle has a thick, soft, wavy coat and can have a variety of colors such as black, tan, and brown. Usually, the Bernedoodle is not as high-maintenance in terms of coat care as compared to some other breeds and does not require extensive grooming or haircuts. The coat's length can typically vary from short to medium length.
Bernedoodles typically have a diet that consists of a good quality commercial dry kibble as well as occasional servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. During their growth period, their diet should include an appropriate nutritional balance of proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Small meals spread throughout the day may be beneficial, especially during the first few weeks of life. Health supplements, such as fish oil, may sometimes be necessary to ensure the Bernedoodle receives the proper amount of vitamins and minerals.
Before bringing your new Bernedoodle home, it's important to make sure your home is ready. Begin by puppy-proofing the area. Remove any dangerous items that your puppy could accidentally chew on, such as electric cords, dangling clothing, small items, or chemical cleaning supplies. Next, create a designated space for your pet using a pet bed, filling it with blankets and toys. Make sure to provide a secure location that's away from any other pets or children. Lastly, create an area where your Bernedoodle can go to the bathroom outside, away from your house.
The size of a Bernedoodle puppy can vary from toy size to extra-large, depending on the breeding of its two parent breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog and Standard Poodle. Generally, Bernedoodles reach their full size at approximately two years of age; at this time, they usually weigh between fifty and one hundred pounds, although there are outliers. For example, Toy Bernedoodles may weigh as little as ten pounds and Giant Bernedoodles can reach up to one hundred and fifty pounds.
For optimal health, it is highly recommended to at least walk your Bernedoodle for 30 minutes per day. Doing so can help provide your pup with the necessary daily physical activity that is beneficial to its overall wellbeing. Walking your Bernedoodle helps with healthy weight, endurance, cardiovascular health as well as mental stimulation. If your Bernedoodle is particularly energetic, you may want to increase the amount of time walking each day. This can help maintain your pup's physical condition while also letting it expend its energy.
Bernedoodles are a great choice when it comes to dogs that are family-friendly, particularly with kids. They are typically gentle, patient and intelligent, so they do well with children. They are willing to play, yet patient enough to lay down quietly when playtime is over. Being social dogs they easily develop a bond with children and are unquestionably loyal. They have an uncanny way of understanding what the kids need and respond accordingly.
Training a Bernedoodle can be easy and rewarding, but will require consistency. It's important to start with basic obedience training such as teaching your Bernedoodle commands like "sit" and "stay". Training a Bernedoodle also involves teaching it not to jump, chew furniture, or bark excessively. With patience, positive reinforcement in the form of treats and praise, and regular practice, your Bernedoodle will learn quickly and likely start obeying commands faster than other breeds.
