Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a unique and increasingly popular hybrid of two of the most beloved dog breeds: Bernese Mountain Dog and Standard Poodle. These mixed breed dogs are known for their intelligence and affectionate, friendly demeanor. They are also lowto non-shedding, making them a great choice for families who are looking for a cleaner living environment. On the other hand, Bernedoodles can require a lot of exercises and grooming, and they may chew or bark more if not given enough attention, so they are not suited for everyone.
Bernedoodles are known to be a hybrid breed of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, both of which are inherently hypoallergenic. As a result, Bernedoodles can have similar hypoallergenic traits, depending on the parentage. Oftentimes, Bernedoodles that have a parent that is an F1B Poodle (which means one of the parents is a Bernedoodle and the other is a Poodle) have a higher tendency to be hypoallergenic due to the higher amount of Poodle genes.
Bernedoodles, like other dogs, prefer food that is rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. Ideally, these dogs should be fed a diet of high-quality dry kibble and other nutritious items like fresh fruits, cooked meats, healthy carbohydrates, and unprocessed grains. Regular meals should be supplemented with treats every now and then. It is important to always feed your Bernedoodle high-quality kibble that has been formulated specifically for their breed and size.
Preparing your home for a new Bernedoodle can be an exciting task. To ensure your pup's safety and comfort, start with stocking up on puppy safety essentials like sturdy chew toys, a durable and comfortable dog bed, and any other items which promote physical and mental stimulation. Make sure to install a pet gate to help limit and monitor access to certain parts of your home for your Bernedoodle. Identify and puppy-proof potential hazardous areas, such as exposed cords, chemicals, or small objects which your pup may accidentally ingest.
Bernedoodles can reach varying sizes once fully grown, depending on their parents. On average, these teddy bear-like pups can weigh anywhere between 40 to 70 pounds, and reach heights between 17 to 28 inches at the withers (the highest point of their spine). The size can also depend on the type of Bernedoodle and the generation, with F1, F1b, and F2 Bernedoodles all having slightly different growth potentials.
The amount of exercise required for a Bernedoodle varies based on age, health, and activity level. While an adult Bernedoodle should generally get 30 minutes to 2 hours of activity a day, puppies may need an additional 10 to 20 minutes of walking a day. It’s best to start slowly and build up as your pup gets older to help them develop strong muscles and bones. Additionally, aim to provide short walks or playtime multiple times throughout the day, rather than one long session, to ensure they get the most out of their exercise.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles are known for not only being incredibly loyal and loving, but also for being good with children and having a low-shedding coat. This breed is a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, making them incredibly intelligent and highly trainable. They can also come in a variety of sizes and colors, so it's easy to find one that suits your family's needs. When trained early and consistently, these dogs make wonderful additions to any household and make an excellent family companion that is sure to bring much joy and love.
Training a Bernedoodle requires patience and consistency. Start by establishing yourself as the pack leader and providing them with clear boundaries. If your Bernedoodle is a puppy, crate training and positive reinforcement can be very helpful in establishing and reinforcing basic commands such as "sit", "lie down", or "stay". Teaching them to respond to verbal commands helps create a strong bond between you and your Bernedoodle. An obedience class is also a great way to socialize them and to introduce them to commands in a controlled environment.
