Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross-breed of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle, and are renowned for their lovable, playful personalities and highly intelligent nature. They can be quite large; average weight is between 25-50 lbs, and have a typically good life expectancy of 10-12 years. Bernedoodles can also come in a range of colors, from black, brown, and tan to grey, white, and even apricot. Furthermore, they're usually hypoallergenic and don’t shed.
Bernedoodles have the potential to be hypoallergenic due to their hybrid nature. Bernedoodles are a mix of Bernese Mountain Dogs, which are known to shed moderate to heavy amounts; and Poodles, which produce little dander and are considered to be one of the hypoallergenic breeds. This makes Bernedoodles a great option for people who suffer from allergies. However, it is important to understand that the general level of allergies are unique to each individual.
Bernedoodles are a hybrid of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, so their diet can vary depending on their specific mix. Generally, they should be given a high quality, nutritionally balanced diet of dry kibble, wet food, and a few healthy treats. Healthy wet food and freeze-dried raw food can also be beneficial for Bernedoodles, as long as it fits within their specific calorie needs. It's important to always adjust their diet to account for any potential health issues that the Bernedoodle may have.
To properly prepare for your new Bernedoodle, you should start by getting your home ready. Make sure your home is properly cleaned and puppy-proofed; remove any hazards to keep your Bernedoodle safe. Next, you'll need to get all necessary supplies, such as a maternity pen and puppy food. Additionally, consider investing in grooming supplies, a collar and leash, and any other accessories you may need. Lastly, make sure your Bernedoodle has a comfortable space like a crate and bed or dog bed.
Bernedoodles generally grow to be medium to large dogs. A Bernedoodle typically weighs between 40 and 80 pounds, with male Bernedoodles typically reaching the higher end of that scale. However, they can weigh anywhere between 25 and 90 pounds. The height of adult Bernedoodles will depend on whether they have more of a Poodle parent or a Bernese Mountain Dog parent. On average, if they have more of a Poodle parent, they will grow to be around 20-25 inches tall at the shoulder.
Every dog is different when it comes to the amount of exercise they need. Generally speaking, Bernedoodles should be given the opportunity to go on at least 30 minutes of walks per day in order to fulfill their exercise requirements. It's important to note, though, that certain factors should be taken into consideration when determining the appropriate length of a walk. These factors include the age and health of your Bernedoodle and the weather conditions. If it is hot outside, it is best to limit the walk duration to a shorter time than usual.
Bernedoodles can be an excellent choice for families, as they have many desirable characteristics. Bernedoodles tend to be friendly, loving, and intelligent, making them great companions and devoted family members. As hybrids of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, Bernedoodles are six to eight times less likely to inherit genetic issues than their purebred counterparts. They are also highly adaptable to different environments, people and other animals and can fit into just about any living situation.
Training a Bernedoodle can vary in difficulty, but with patience, consistency and positive reinforcement, teaching your Bernedoodle basic commands can be relatively straightforward. Bernedoodles are intelligent and eager to please, so if you offer rewards-based training with plenty of praise and rewards, your Bernedoodle will quickly and happily learn the commands they need to become an obedient and pleasant companion. It is important to note that Bernedoodles can be a bit stubborn at times, so if your Bernedoodle refuses to obey a command, try to stay calm and use more enticing rewards for reinforcement.
