Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog breed, mixing both the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle breeds. It's popular for many reasons, most notably, its size, intelligence, friendly nature, and its hypoallergenic coat, which makes it a great pet for those with allergies. Bernedoodles come in all shapes and sizes, from the Mini, which can grow to 12-17 inches, to the Giant, growing to 28 inches or taller. They typically weigh anywhere from 15-89 pounds.
Bernedoodles are often touted as hypoallergenic, but there is no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog. The truth is that a Bernedoodle's individual hypoallergenicity depends on a variety of factors including the type of coat (wool, fleece, or even a combination of both) and the combination of its parent breeds.
Feeding your Bernedoodle a nutrition-rich, high-quality diet is key to keeping it healthy and happy. All dogs need a few basic nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. It’s important to choose a food that is formulated specifically for your Bernedoodle's life stage, whether it's a puppy, adult, or senior. Additionally, you should have a selection of treats on hand that are specially formulated for dogs, and discuss these treats with your veterinarian before giving them to your Bernedoodle.
Before welcoming a Bernedoodle pup into your home, it is important to make sure the space is prepared. Start by introducing your pup to their new area by cleaning their sleeping space and arranging it with a comfortable bed. Ensure the area is puppy proof and remove any dangerous objects such as cords or small objects that can be easily swallowed. Ensure you have all the necessary food, toys and supplies you will need, such as a food and water bowl, collar and leash, training treats, and grooming items. Make sure to include a designated potty area. Start training your pup early and be consistent;
The size of a Bernedoodle puppy may vary depending on factors such as the parents' size and their individual genetics. Generally, a standard Bernedoodle may weigh between 40-70 pounds and be about 18-21 inches tall at the shoulder. It may be larger or smaller depending on how much it takes from each parent. Miniature Bernedoodle puppies tend to be about 10-45 pounds and about 12-17 inches tall. Toy Bernedoodles may weigh anywhere from 8-30 pounds and be 8-14 inches tall.
Bernedoodles need plenty of regular exercise to stay healthy and fit. The exact amount of exercise depends on the age and size of the Bernedoodle, but on average they need at least an hour of activity every day, divided into two or three sessions. This should comprise a mixture of aerobic activity such as walking, running and playing, but also more sedentary activities such as training and playing brain games to keep their minds active. With sufficient exercise, Bernedoodles will remain happy, healthy, and well-balanced both physically and mentally.
Bernedoodles are known for being very friendly and affectionate, which makes them great family pets. Their personality traits make them excellent companions for children of all ages and they love interacting with kids. They're patient and caring and possess an impressive energy level and enthusiasm, which is perfect for active, outdoorsy kids. They may be large in size, but they're gentle enough that kids can safely play with them. Bernedoodles are intelligent and eager to please their owners, which makes them easy to train.
Training a Bernedoodle can be relatively easy. Since Bernedoodles are typically intelligent, highly trainable dogs that are eager to please their owners, they may pick up behavior more quickly than other dogs. However, as with any dog, training a Bernedoodle will require patience, consistency, and repetition. It is important to establish routines and to not over-exert the pup, as this may be counterproductive. Additionally, positive reinforcement is key, and one should always reward a Bernedoodle for showing desirable behavior. Making learning fun makes a difference and helps transition into more difficult commands.
