Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, resulting in an intelligent and loyal dog with a hypoallergenic coat. They are great family dogs that get along well with children, cats, and other dogs. They are generally very friendly and easy to train, though they need a lot of social interaction and mental stimulation. Bernedoodles thrive in active environments and typically love to go on long walks. They are also low-maintenance when it comes to grooming and don't require a lot of brushing and trimming.
Bernedoodles have a low to non-shedding coat, depending on their genetics. Generally speaking, the Bernedoodle may shed a small amount due to their mixture of genetic components, however they are considered a low-shedding hybrid. The F1Bernedoodle (50/50) coat tends to produce less hair, and the F2 generation, or multigen (75/25), often produces even lower levels of shedding. Some Bernedoodle owners may not even notice shedding at all.
Yes, Bernedoodles do have special dietary needs. It is important to keep in mind that, as with any dog, the dietary needs of a Bernedoodle can vary depending on age, activity level, and overall health. In general, the breed requires a nutrient-dense, high-quality diet to stay healthy and active. Protein should be the main source of nutrition, supplemented with healthy fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. For puppies, they should be given smaller meals more often, while older Bernedoodles may need less food.
Becoming the best puppy parent before your Bernedoodle arrives starts with researching the breed's characteristics, needs, and training requirements. Then, you'll want to purchase any supplies the pup may need such as toys, a collar, leash, and food bowls. If you're able to, it's helpful to puppy-proof your home by putting away any breakable items and anything you don't want chewed.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy depends on its parents. Bernedoodles usually fall into three categories Mini (under 30lbs), Medium (30-45lb), and Standard (over 45lbs). Depending on the combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle parents, your Bernedoodle could end up small, large or somewhere in between. Generally speaking, a Bernedoodle’s size will be more consistent when both the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents are the same size.
It is recommended that Bernedoodles get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per day. This could include a combination of walking, running, or playing outdoors. If you are walking your Bernedoodle, at least 20 minutes should be dedicated to walking, since Bernedoodles are known to have higher energy levels than other breeds. However, take into consideration the size and age of your Bernedoodle as this could alter the amount of daily walking needed.
Bernedoodles are renowned for their friendly, even-tempered, and gentle nature. They are known to get along well with people of all ages, including children, thanks to their sociability and intelligence. Bernedoodles also typically possess an excellent memory, so they can recall commands, instructions, and other instructions given to them by their caretakers. They also respond well to firm, consistent training carried out in a patient and loving manner.
Training a Bernedoodle is possible, but it does require some patience and determination. With a commitment to working with your dog, it can be quite effective. Bernedoodles have strong personalities and as with most breeds, consistency and rewards-based training techniques are the best methods to use when teaching them good behaviors. It can take patience and effort throughout the process, but establishing a good relationship and understanding between the dog and the owner, can make it much easier.
