Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are truly unique and loveable dogs! Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, combining the intelligence and hypoallergenic traits of the Poodle with the loyalty and gentleness of the Bernese Mountain Dog. They come in different sizes, with three varieties: mini (15-35 lbs.), regular (35-50 lbs.), and giant (50+ lbs.). As they are extremly intelligent and eager to please, they are very easy to train and highly intuitive.
The Bernedoodle's coat is best described as hypoallergenic, low-shedding, and wonderfully soft. The coat can range from short to very long, usually having a wavy to curly texture. It is typically a tri-colored coat—solid black and white with a darker brown splashed through. Some Bernedoodles may have the classic Bernese Mountain Dog long, silky fur on their ears, while others may have an even combination of fur length. Regardless of length, Bernedoodles are said to have some of the softest coats out there.
It is important to take into consideration your Bernedoodle's age, size, and activity level when selecting a food to feed. Because of their hybrid vigor and size, Bernedoodles are typically relatively healthy, but making sure their diet is tailored to their individual needs is important for proper growth and health. Providing a quality diet with the appropriate amount of protein, carbohydrates, fibers, and healthy fats is best. It is also important to supplement the diet with necessary vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in order to ensure optimal health.
Becoming the best puppy parent while waiting for your Bernedoodle starts with doing your research. Having a good understanding of their breed and any associated health issues, tips for grooming, common dietary restrictions, and socialization are important ingredients for success. After the essential knowledge is gathered, draft a routine that works best for you, your pet, and family. This routine should include regular checkups, dental care, and nail trimming; alongside exercising, proper nutrition, and positive reinforcement training.
Typically, Bernedoodles come in three sizes that typically depend on the size of their parents. The Mini Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Miniature Poodle, and will weigh between 15 and 30 lbs. The Medium Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Medium Poodle and will typically weigh between 30 and 45 lbs. Lastly, the Standard Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Standard Poodle, and will typically weigh 45 to more than 100 lbs.
Bernedoodles are incredibly active, energetic dogs and need a significant amount of exercise every day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is important to create an exercise plan that outlines what type of activity your Bernedoodle should do each day. Depending on the age of your Bernedoodle, walks, running, agility courses and general playtime are all great activities to keep your pup engaged, both mentally and physically. A well-exercised Bernedoodle should have a minimum of two hours of exercise every day, however, more active individuals will likely need additional physical activity.
Bernedoodles are often praised for being wonderful family dogs due to their combination of Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle traits. Bernedoodles are highly intelligent and have a delightful, upbeat personality, making them enjoyable companions for all members of the family. They are equally affectionate with children and adults, and don't require a particularly active lifestyle, so they make great additions to busy households as well. They are loyal and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train for basic commands, agility and more.
Training a Bernedoodle can be an easy or challenging process depending on the individual dog's personality and how much time and effort you are able to put into the task. Like all breeds, Bernedoodles will respond best to positive reinforcement and consistency with any commands you give them. It also helps to start training at an early age and provide plenty of play, exercise and social interaction so they learn proper behavior etiquette. Rewards-based training is great for Bernedoodles and their eager-to-please nature often makes it easier for them to pick up commands quicker than other breeds.
