Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. It is a unique crossbreed of dog that tends to be hypoallergenic, intelligent, and friendly. As a result, the Bernedoodle is a great choice for families and is known for being a relatively low-maintenance pet. A Bernedoodle can range from looking more like a Bernese Mountain Dog to more similar to a Poodle. They tend to have a thick, wavy coat and aren't prone to shedding as much as other dog breeds.
Bernedoodles are often considered hypoallergenic due to their mix of two breeds: the Poodle, which is known to be a hypoallergenic breed of dog, and the Bernese Mountain Dog, which is not a hypoallergenic breed. The combination of these two breeds is considered a low-shedding breed and can be great for those that have dog allergies. However, Bernedoodles still generate dander and an allergic reaction to any breed of dog is always possible.
Bernedoodles have approximately the same dietary needs as other breeds of dogs. Generally, a well-balanced kibble formulated for adult dogs is the best choice for a Bernedoodle. However, there are certain dietary considerations based upon age and activity level. For example, puppies need extra calories to promote healthy growth, while elderly or less active senior dogs will need fewer calories and more easily digested proteins. Additionally, it's important to monitor your Bernedoodle's weight, as some larger breeds can easily gain too much.
Before welcoming a Bernedoodle into your home, it is important to prepare yourself and your home for your new furry friend. One of the most important things to keep in mind is to make sure that the Bernedoodle is well-socialized and comfortable with people, other animals, and different environments. Additionally, acquiring the necessary supplies such as food, toys, and a collar should be done in advance of your pet's arrival. Providing them with a safe and secure environment is also vital for proper dog development.
Bernedoodles come in three different sizes; Toy, Mini and Standard. Toy Bernedoodles typically range in size from 10-25 pounds and stand 17-23 inches at the shoulder. Mini Bernedoodles are between 25-49 pounds, and measure 17-21 inches at the shoulder. Finally, Standard Bernedoodles weigh 50 pounds or more, and stand 21-29 inches at the shoulder.
Bernedoodles are generally quite active and need a good balance of physical and mental exercise to stay happy and healthy. It is recommended to give them at least an hour of exercise each day, with a variety of activities to keep their minds stimulated and bodies in shape. This can include walking, running, playing fetch, agility course, or other activities which can help satisfy their active energy needs. Remember, fresh air and exposure to the outdoors are essential for Bernedoodle well-being in addition to exercise.
Bernedoodles make an excellent addition to any family. Not only do these intelligent and loyal pups possess an outgoing, friendly personality, they are also highly trainable, making them rather easy to train and adaptable to the family dynamics. They are also known to be gentle and affectionate, making them great with children. They are rather low maintenance when it comes to grooming, ensuring their owners won't have to worry too much about their upkeep. If you're looking for a dog to accompany you and your family for years to come, a Bernedoodle is an ideal option.
Training your Bernedoodle can be a fun and rewarding process if you approach it the right way. The key is to keep the training sessions short and use positive reinforcement. First and foremost, it is important to establish yourself as the pack leader; Bernedoodles may be friendly and eager to please, but they need structure and guidance on how to behave. Once you have established yourself as the leader, you can begin teaching basic commands such as sit and stay. Use treats and lots of praise when your pup complies with your requests.
