Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a crossbreed between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are known for being intelligent, loyal and affectionate companions with a lowto moderate-energy level. These pups can come in a variety of coat colors and sizes, depending on the specific parent breeds. Generally, the puppies take on the most desirable traits from both breeds such as low-shedding and low-maintenance coats, increased intelligence, and minimal health problems.
Bernedoodles are generally considered to be a low-shedding dog breed. They are a crossbreed of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, so they do not shed in the same way as other dog breeds. The mixture of genes causes the coat of the Bernedoodle to be extremely dense, which means that the hairs of the dog are more likely to remain locked in their coat. As they have both wavy and straight fur, they could still produce some hair, but it is considerably less than other dog breeds.
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, so it must be fed a diet that meets the needs of both breeds. Generally, dry food is the best for your Bernedoodle as wet food may not provide the nutrition your pet needs. Feeding a combination of protein-rich dry kibble, healthy fats, and carbohydrates will help your Bernedoodle lead a healthy and active life. Some healthy food choices like fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, can be a great addition to their diet.
Before bringing your new Bernedoodle home, it's important to make sure your house is ready for it's arrival. Begin by puppy-proofing your home, make sure all medicines, small objects, cleaning supplies, cords, and plants are out of reach. Provide your Bernedoodle with a comfortable bed in a quiet space in your home, a plush blanket, and a variety of toys and chew items. Make sure your windows, patio portal, and any other access to the outside world are secure, so your puppy won't wander off.
Bernedoodles are a hybrid breed and their adult size depends on several factors. The size of the parents, known as F1 or F1B, will influence the size of the puppies. A Bernedoodle pup bred from a standard Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog is likely to be on the "Standard" size, usually 50-70 pounds. If a Bernedoodle is bred from two smaller-sized parents, such as a miniature or toy poodle, then the pup will be on the "Miniature" side, usually 15-35 pounds.
The amount of time you should spend walking your Bernedoodle each day will largely depend on his or her age, health, size and individual needs. Generally speaking, an adult Bernedoodle should be getting out for daily walks that last between 30 and 60 minutes. Puppies may need more frequent and generally shorter walks, about 20 minutes at a time. To maximize your Bernedoodle's physical and mental well-being, you might want to also include a few shorter walks throughout the day.
Absolutely! Bernedoodles have great temperaments and are very loyal to their families, making them an excellent addition to any home. They love to spend time with their human owners and are often called "velcro" dogs because of their desire for close companionship. Bernedoodles are intelligent, kind, and have natural charm, making them great companions for children. They are a good size for most families and have very low shedding coats, which is a plus for many households.
Training your Bernedoodle requires a consistent, gentle approach with lots of positive reinforcement. This can include using a variety of treats for rewards, reasonable expectations for your pup's age and capability level, and patient repetition of commands. Always be sure to make training sessions fun for your pup. Focusing on basic commands, like sit, stay, and come, is a great place to start. You may also want to use verbal cues and gestures to reinforce commands as your Bernedoodle gets more comfortable. When rewarding your pup, give lots of praise and physical affection while they are completing the command.
