Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new hybrid breed that have become increasingly popular. They are a combination of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, and are known for their loving and affectionate nature. Fun facts about Bernedoodles include that they are hypoallergenic due to their mixed-breed heritage, making them a great choice for those who suffer from allergies. Additionally, Bernedoodles are often considered to be low-to-no-shedding, making them an ideal choice for those with housekeeping restrictions.
Bernedoodles can generally be considered hypoallergenic, with some caveats. As a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, they can inherit qualities of each breed, including the Poodle's hypoallergenic coat. While the Poodle parent can pass down tight curls and a low-shedding coat, it's important to keep in mind that the Bernese parent can contribute a thicker coat and shedding. Nonetheless, the majority of Bernedoodles have a low-shedding coat and may be well tolerated by people with allergies.
It is important to provide your Bernedoodle with the proper nutrition to ensure they remain healthy and strong. The best way to feed a Bernedoodle is to provide them high-quality dry food that is specifically designed for medium/large breeds. Be sure to check the ingredients of the food as well as the caloric count as Bernedoodles are active dogs and need a specially formulated diet to meet their energy needs. You should also supplement your Bernedoodle's diet with healthy wet food options and provide treats that are low in sodium and sugar.
When you get ready to bring your new Bernedoodle home, there are several important steps you can take to ensure that everything goes smoothly. To begin with, make sure your home is appropriately dog-proofed by placing out-of-reach any small items that could be a choking hazard, and providing any secure fences or enclosures if needed. Set aside a comfortable space for the Bernedoodle to sleep, rest and play; this can either be an area of your home or a separate room.
Bernedoodles come in four main sizes, ranging from small to extra-large. The small size typically ranges from 15-30 pounds, making them ideal for those living in smaller dwellings or those who want an easier-to-handle companion. Medium-sized Bernedoodles can range from 30-45 pounds and make excellent family pets, while a large-sized Bernedoodle usually weighs between 45-65 pounds and may be better suited to an active home environment.
For optimal physical and mental health, your Bernedoodle should be active with at least an hour of exercise per day, with a minimum of 20-30 minutes of purposeful exercise such as walking or playing specific games. If you divide the activity into shorter periods, three 10-minute walks throughout the day would be enough to keep your Bernedoodle mentally stimulated and physically fit. It is important to vary the length and type of activity as well as the terrain, e.g. a park, a beach, and city streets.
Bernedoodles typically make wonderful family pets, with their social and loving personality. They are very intelligent dogs, making them relatively easy to train. They can also be quite low maintenance due to their tendency to shed only light to moderate amounts of hair. Their size and energy level may vary slightly depending on the size and energy level of the specific parent breeds. Generally though, they are a medium to large breed, with an average energy level that can mix with plenty of indoor activities and outdoor play as well.
Training a Bernedoodle is similar to training any other type of dog. Firstly, you need to create a routine with consistency in order to help your Bernedoodle learn and develop good habits. You can start with basic commands, such as 'sit' and 'stay', and offer rewards for successful completion. Next, you can use positive reinforcement to motivate them. Praise and reward your Bernedoodle for doing the right thing, such as when they come to you when called. Make training a fun activity; be patient, flexible, and work at the Bernedoodles pace.
