Bernedoodles are a hybrid cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a standard Poodle. They are a relatively new breed of designer dog that was developed in 2003, and they have become increasingly popular among dog lovers in recent years. They are a medium-sized, low-shedding breed with a social and gentle temperament. Interesting fun facts about Bernedoodles include that they are very intelligent and easy to train, they can live up to 15 years, and due to the Bernese Mountain Dog heritage, they come in black, white and brown tricolor.
Bernedoodles are often advertised as a non-shedding breed, especially those that are bred with a Poodle parent. However, these low-shedding characteristics do not mean that the Bernedoodle never sheds. Since the Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed, they can have different coats with individual characteristics. Therefore, there are some Bernedoodles that do have an average amount of shedding. It is best to do research and ask questions of the breeder to know the coat type and shedding expectations that come with the Bernedoodle of that litter.
Bernedoodles, like all dogs, are omnivores. This means that they need a balance of different nutrients that typically come from both animal and plant sources. A Bernedoodle's diet should include lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats such as omega 3 fatty acids. In addition, additional vitamin and mineral supplements may be necessary, depending on the individual dog’s activity level and other factors. Commercial brands of dog food are generally the most reliable for providing a balanced diet for Bernedoodles, although fresh, organic ingredients can also be added for variety.
Becoming the best puppy parent before getting your Bernedoodle starts with researching the breed and learning how best to provide them with the proper care, environment and training. Preparing your home before bringing your new puppy home is critical as well. Make sure it is safe for the pup by puppy-proofing and keeping items out of reach that the puppy could choke or hurt themselves on. Bernedoodles typically come in three size categories corresponding to their parent breeds: standard, miniature and toy. Standard Bernedoodles are the largest, having been bred from Bernese Mountain Dog and Standard Poodle parents and weighing approximately 50-90 pounds. Miniature Bernedoodles weigh 15-50 pounds as a result of their being bred from Miniature Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog parents. Lastly, Toy Bernedoodles are the smallest variety being bred from Toy or Miniature Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog parents and usually reach an adult weight of 10-25 pounds.
A Bernedoodle should be walked at least 30 minutes per day to keep them healthy and fit. Walking can help your Bernedoodle stay healthy, both physically and mentally. Walking is also good for their social and emotional development, allowing your Bernedoodle to explore the outside world. It's important to keep the walks engaging by trying different routes and encouraging your Bernedoodle to interact with their environment and other dogs. Having a regular walking schedule will also help your Bernedoodle become more disciplined, as they will learn to wait for their walks and look forward to them.
