Questions & Answers
A Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog breed created from a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Bernedoodles tend to be medium-medium to large in size, depending on the size of the parents, and are generally gentle, intelligent, and social animals. They are sometimes referred to as "designer dogs," as they are a mix of two other dog breeds. Bernedoodles tend to inherit both the docility of the Poodle and the beauty and gentle nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog and can make devoted companions and family pets.
Bernedoodles come in a variety of coat types and colors, but they all have one thing in common: an incredibly soft, fluffy coat. Depending on their genetic lineage, Bernedoodles may be low-shedding, non-shedding, or somewhere in between. They also come in a variety of colors, such as solid black, solid brown, merle, phantom, cream, white and grey. Beyond color, their coat texture can range from straight to wavy, to curly and even corded.
An ideal diet for your Bernedoodle will depend on their age, activity level, and general health. Generally speaking, it’s best to feed your Bernedoodle a complete and balanced diet designed specifically for dogs, in the form of kibble, canned food, or a combination of both. Kibble should be made with high-quality ingredients such as real meat and/or fish, vegetables and fruit, as well as appropriate levels of fat, fiber and carbohydrates to help maintain your dog’s overall health.
Preparing for a new Bernedoodle is a fun experience! First and foremost, be sure your home is as safe and comfortable as possible for your pup. Remove any objects that are easily knocked over or swallowed and keep dangerous chemicals locked away. You should puppy-proof the areas your dog is likely to explore and make sure that your backyard is secure with a fence that is at least 6 feet tall and 2 feet deep to keep your pup from escaping.
Bernedoodles, the adorable mix of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, can range in size from small to extra-large. Standard Bernedoodles are typically between 45 and 80 pounds and can reach heights of 22 to 28 inches, while miniature Bernedoodles typically range in size from 20 to 50 pounds and reach heights of 18 to 22 inches.
Yes, Bernedoodles are an active dog breed! They are highly energetic and require a great deal of physical and mental stimulation. Bernedoodles can do well in a variety of settings from being a jogging partner to participating in a variety of dog sports. They are naturally herding dogs and can give active owners a great experience. Bernedoodles require daily walks, agility courses, and games of fetch, frisbee, or any other mentally or physically stimulating activity.
Bernedoodles are typically great with kids! They tend to have a very friendly and gentle demeanor, making them excellent companions for children. In addition, their intelligence, combined with a natural desire to please their owners, means that Bernedoodles are quite trainable and can even be taught basic commands. With regular exercise and plenty of attention, Bernedoodles are fantastic family pets who are sure to provide a lifetime of unique love and devotion.
Training a Bernedoodle requires patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. Start with basic commands such as "sit," "stay," or "come." As your Bernedoodle practices each command, reward them with a treat to show that you are pleased with their performance. If necessary, use a gentle reminder or lead to give your Bernedoodle the desired signal. Avoid using negative reinforcement--it can make your Bernedoodle anxious or stressed. As your Bernedoodle becomes more confident, incorporate more challenging commands and create new routines. Consider alternate rewards such as walks or treats.
