Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a spirited and affectionate breed that make wonderful companion dogs. They are excellent cuddlers, thrive in close-knit families, and love any chance to play. They are highly intelligent breed and respond best to positive reinforcement training. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should be groomed regularly, with a focus on brushing to prevent tangles and matting in their very soft coats. They do not require vigorous daily exercise, but should get regular walks to keep in shape and remain healthy.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a low-shedding coat, which means they require minimal grooming, making them an ideal breed for people who don't want to deal with excessive amounts of shedding. That being said, all breeds, including Cavaliers, do /some/ shedding and can produce a bit of pet dander. Also, they do need regular brushing to remove the loose hairs and keep their coat looking shiny and healthy. All in all, while Cavaliers may not be considered non-shedding, their amount of shedding is still relatively low when compared to other breeds.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should consume a well-balanced, high-quality diet preferred for small breeds. This should include both wet and dry food designed for small breeds. Meat should be the main source of protein, with fruits and vegetables providing essential vitamins and minerals for optimal health. While small amounts of treats can be given as a reward, it is important to monitor the quantities closely, as to not over feed. It is also essential to be mindful of the type of treats given, opting for those that provide nutritional benefits.
To prepare for your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the most important thing to do is research about the breed. Understanding the needs of your dog and the temperament of the breed will let you plan the best environment for you and your newest canine companion. You'll need to purchase items like food and grooming supplies, toys, a leash and collar, and a bed. Additionally, research what health care is recommended for your dog, from preventive vaccinations to other forms of care. Make sure you have a vet already established, and consider taking a basic obedience class with your pup.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically considered to be a very small breed of toy dogs, weighing between 8-14 pounds and standing at an average height of 12-13 inches at the shoulder. However, this size can range slightly based on whether a Cavalier is a Toy, Petite or Standard size. Toy Cavs weigh roughly between 6-10 pounds, Petites usually range between 8-13 pounds, and Standard Cavs typically range between 10-18 pounds.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a moderate amount of exercise. While they may be content with spending their days lounging around the house, it is important to make sure they get enough mental and physical stimulation throughout the day. They should be taken for a daily leisurely walk, but if the weather isn't too hot and if they are fit and healthy, they may enjoy a brisk walk of at least 30 minutes per day. Additionally, they can benefit from an outdoor play session of fetch or swimming at least once a week.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make excellent family dogs. They are friendly and affectionate, making them ideal for children, but gentle enough for seniors as well. Their intelligence and trainability mean they are easy to teach good habits, and as an added bonus you’ll never be short of entertainment due to their playful nature. Not only do they get along well with other pets, but Cavaliers love being around people too and are very loyal companions, often forming intense bonds with family members.
Training your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel successfully requires patience and positive reinforcement. Start simple with commands like sit and stay. Begin with 5-10 minutes training each day and make sure to reward your pup with treats and verbal praises to reinforce that they have done something right. As your pup becomes more familiar with the commands, start to practice them in various different places and environments. Gradually increase the difficulty level and amount of time devoted to training. Make sure you are consistent with commands and never resort to yelling or punishment.
