Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small yet sturdy breed of spaniel dating back to the 1600s. Traditionally, they were bred as companion dogs, as they are highly affectionate and have a strong desire to stay close to their owners. As a result, they make wonderful family pets and often serve as excellent therapy dogs. This breed was originally bred to have a long, silky and wavy coat, and unique markings on the ears and face. Cavaliers have long been known for their placid and gentle temperament and are known to be forgiving and sprightly.
While all dogs shed to some degree, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered low-shedding breeds. With regular brushing, you can reduce the amount of loose hair, dander, and allergens in your house. While it is not non-shedding, you can still keep it under control with proper grooming habits. In addition, Cavies tend to be quite tolerant of being groomed and often seem to enjoy the attention, making it a much simpler task. Keeping their coats in good condition can also help reduce their shedding.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, like all dogs, require a balanced diet and are not typically prone to dietary sensitivity. However, there are a few special considerations to keep in mind. These dogs may require higher quality proteins such as chicken, beef, or turkey as these are more easily digested by their delicate tummies. Many Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have suffered dental problems due to their short muzzles, so you might want to consider softer dry food or wet food but always make sure that it is high in quality and balanced to meet the nutritional needs of the breed.
Preparing your home for a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an important part of the adoption process. Make sure that the space that the puppy will inhabit has been thoroughly child-proofed. Place coverage over electric cords, remove any hazardous items, and gate off access to poison items like cleaning supplies and medicines. Create a comfortable bed, such as a blanket or kennel, in a designated area and establish a comfortable sleeping routine. Make sure to have plenty of food and water dishes, as well as puppy-proof toys to give your pet something to keep them occupied.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can reach sizes a bit smaller than the average spaniel breed. Generally, they grow to be between 12 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 13 to 18 pounds. Some can be slightly larger or smaller depending on their genetics, diet, and exercise. The breed is generally built to be round and compact with short legs, making them ideal for living in apartments or small homes. Their coat is long and silky and can come in a variety of colors such as ruby, black and tan, tri-color and blenheim.
An ideal amount of exercise for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is between 25-90 minutes per day, depending on the individual dog's age and health. Generally speaking, younger and healthier dogs should get closer to the 90-minute end of the spectrum, while older or less active dogs should aim for 25-45 minutes of walking. Make sure you take frequent breaks from your walks, as the breed can become easily overheated or suffer from exhaustion or injury. A few short walks throughout the day are preferable to one long walk.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS) can be excellent pets for families. Not only are they inherently sweet, intelligent, and affectionate, but they are also loyal and gentle making them a great pick for children. Although they do need regular exercise, they are also relatively low energy. Most CKCSs love to cuddle on the couch and hang out with their owners. In addition, they thrive when surrounded by their family, so they make great companions. CJCSs will also alert their owners if something is amiss either by barking or alerting their owners.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. It's essential to start with basic obedience commands including sit, stay, down, come and heel. During training, keep your sessions short, rewarding desired behavior with treats, praise, or play-time. Taking your Cavalier on daily walks and using treats to reward good behavior can help make training easier. Socialize your puppy with new people, animals, and environments to help foster trusting relationships and healthy behavior. When teaching commands, use positive reinforcement and don't scold your puppy if they make mistakes.
