Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, or CKCS for short, are a small breed of spaniel characterized by their long, silky coats and cheerful demeanor. They make excellent companion pets, as they are intelligent, gentle, and eager to please, yet still enjoy being mischievous. CKCS are typically low-maintenance and require minimal offensive grooming and exercise. They are generally active, happy dogs, they enjoy spending time playing with their owners, as well as getting lots of love and attention.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not hypoallergenic. While they do have low shedding coats that produce relatively less dander than other breeds, they are not generally recommended for people with allergies because they do shed some and their coat requires regular grooming. If your allergies are severe, you should consult a qualified allergist regarding a sample test before making a decision. Generally speaking, if your allergies are due to pet hair, dust, pollen, mold, or other environmental allergens, you should already be taking precautions, regardless of the breed of animal you bring home.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need a diet that has a balance of high quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. Depending on their size, weight, and activity level typically they should be fed between ½ and 1 ½ cups of dry food per day, divided into two meals. When selecting a food for your pet it is important to look for foods that are free of fillers, by-products and artificial ingredients. To keep your pet healthy it is recommended that you also provide them with annual veterinary check ups and a balanced, nutritious diet tailored to their age and activity level.
Preparing for a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is both exciting and important! Research your breed and determine the type of diet, exercise, and grooming needs specific to this breed. Have supplies ready such as a crate, food and water bowls, collar and leash, and appropriate toys. Find a good veterinarian in your area and schedule a checkup appointment ahead of time. Socialize your pet by introducing him or her to other pets and people as soon as possible to help develop relationships and prevent fear or aggression.
Depending on the gender, a full-grown Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can range between 10 and 13 inches tall and 12 to 18 pounds in weight. Generally, adult males will be larger than adult females. Though, keep in mind that even among members of the same breed and gender, some individuals can be larger or smaller than the average. A good indicator of an adult's size will be the size and weight of their parents.
Generally speaking, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should get 30 minutes to an hour of exercise daily, with usually no more than 30 minutes being devoted to walking. This may vary based on age, activity level, and other individual factors, but as a baseline, 30-60 minutes of exercise per day can help your furry friend stay fit and healthy. That 30-60 minutes should be split into several shorter sessions throughout the day, with walking usually making up the bulk of the exercise routine.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are generally known to be gentle and patient animals, making them an excellent choice for growing families. They are loyal and affectionate companions, plus they are easy to train. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can always be counted on to keep kids entertained and protected by their presence. Not to mention they make wonderful walking buddies and are naturally good-natured and sweet. All in all, these sweet, family-friendly dogs make an excellent companion for children.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be a rewarding experience and with a few tips and tricks, it can be a breeze. Start with the basics like house-training, basic obedience commands, and socialization. As with any puppy, it's important to start young so that the pup gets accustomed to the routine quickly. House-training should be done by creating a consistent routine, rewarding good behavior, and refraining from punishing mistakes. Basic obedience such as "sit" and "stay" will come with patience and repetition.
