Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an endearing breed! They are affectionate, friendly and devoted companion dogs, originally bred for royalty in the 16th century. Fun fact, the four distinctiating features of the breed are the long ears, flat skull, feathered tail and large, round eyes! Compared to other small breeds, Cavaliers are active, robust and healthy, making them ideal for activities like obedience, agility, and tracking. Interestingly, the breed's breed standard does not allow for any color other than those already accepted by the American Kennel Club.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a coat that, generally, features long and silky hair with moderate feathering, although there can be slight variations among the breed. They have a medium-length muzzle, occasionally with a blond fringe of fur, and ears that are long and pendulous. The coat is medium-long and slightly wavy or straight while the tips of the ears, the top of the tail, and the breeches are often slightly feathered.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically thrive on a diet that is mainly composed of high-quality dry kibble specially formulated for small breeds. The kibble should be supplemented with freshly cooked and unseasoned meats, such as fish or chicken, as well as cooked vegetables. These nutritional components should be mixed with a proper amount of warm water to create a wet, nutritious meal. It's important to select a kibble that is formulated with protiens, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to support healthy growth.
Preparing for your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. First, make sure you have the necessary supplies to keep your pup comfortable and secure in its new home. Consider buying them a crate, food and water dishes, a leash and collar, and appropriate toys. Also plan to spend the first few weeks training the dog, which can include housebreaking, teaching basic commands, and introducing your pet to its new environment. Most importantly, make sure your Cavalier has consistent access to love, nurture, and affection.
The size of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy will depend on its genetic makeup and history. Generally, adult Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can range anywhere from 12 to 13 inches in height and can weigh anywhere from 13 to 18 pounds. With diligent care, their growth and size can consistently be monitored to ensure the puppy is healthy and achieving its growth milestones. Though most Cavalier King Charles Puppies will likely stay within this range, be aware that some may be a bit larger or smaller than the average.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are an active breed and should get up to 1-2 hours of exercise per day. This may include long walks, running, playing fetch, or learning games such as agility and flyball. Swimming or trips to the dog park are also excellent options. You should also provide your dog with an opportunity to expend energy through mental stimulation, like training and playing fetch games. Additionally, you should give your pup plenty of opportunities to run, play, and socialize with other dogs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be great with children who provide appropriate interaction. They are known as affectionate and great companions, and if you have children, chances are the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels will share a similarly strong bond with them. They are both energetic, lovable, and friendly, and can get along very well with kids of all ages. They make wonderful and loyal four-legged family members that the whole family can enjoy, which makes them ideal for households with children.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may be relatively easy compared to other breeds, as they typically have an eagerness to learn, are docile, gentle, and affectionate. If a Cavalier is socialized properly and consistently, it may be simpler for the owner to teach their new pup basic skills, such as going to the bathroom outside or walking on a leash. It is important to be consistent with your training so that the pup learns the behavior you want it to exhibit.
