Questions & Answers
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small, friendly, and outgoing dog breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. This breed originates from a combination of the English Toy Spaniel and King Charles Spaniel. Cavaliers, as they are commonly known, have large, dark, loving eyes and coat colors in either black and tan, ruby, or tricolor. They usually have level or slightly wavy coats with feathering on the ears, legs, tail, and chest. This breed is very loyal and gets along with people of all ages and other animals in the home.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known for its luxurious silky coat and spectacular range of colors. The medium length coat is smooth and flat, with a little feathering on the chest, back and legs. The colors range from Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tricolor (black, white, tan), Black and Tan, or Ruby. The long ears, eyebrows and cheeks create a gentle, loving expression. Grooming is simple with regular brushing and combing to remove dead hair and tangles, plus occasional baths and trims for the fringes and feet.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do have some specific dietary needs to consider, depending on their activity level and age. Older dogs may need a low-calorie diet to reduce stress on aging joints, while puppies may require a diet high in the proteins and vitamins they need to grow and develop. For adult dogs, a high-quality kibble is an excellent option, with added fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats fed in small amounts.
You should start by researching the breed and understanding their needs. Create a safe environment for the puppy by puppy-proofing use baby gates, exercise pens, or install baby door locks; keep electrical and hazardous items out of reach; and block off any area that could be dangerous. Make sure the puppy’s diet is matched to the appropriate stage of life (puppy, adult, etc.), as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are prone to certain health issues.
The size of your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy will depend on gender and parentage. Generally, adult males will stand between 12 to 13 inches tall and weigh between 13 to 18 pounds. Adult females will be slightly smaller, typically standing 12 inches tall and weighing between 12 to 17 pounds. Growth rates vary, however a healthy puppy should reach its full size around 12 months of age. To ensure your puppy reaches its full potential, provide it with frequent exercise and healthy food full of protein, calcium, and Omega-3 fatty acids.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation in order to stay healthy and happy. Though the exact amount needed will vary depending on the individual pup, typically they should receive at least two 20-30 minute-long walks per day plus time for playing and exploring in a safe, secure and enclosed area. Additionally, they benefit from some sort of structured indoor activity, as they soon become bored and frustrated when they are not adequately stimulated. Thus, it is important to provide your Cavalier with plenty of activities to keep them active and engaged.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be one of the best family dogs. Their natural inclination is to be a loving and loyal companion, as well as being a cheerful addition to any home. They thrive on human companionship, making them a perfect fit for an active, loving family. They are eager to please and incredibly gentle, even with small children. Plus, their small size makes them the perfect pet for small homes or apartments.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is not always easy, but with a bit of patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, it can be achievable. This loyal and loving breed is eager to please, making them highly responsive to proper training. The key to successful training rests in developing a consistent routine for the dog to understand what is expected. Though it is important to use positive reinforcement with any breed, the Cavalier's gentle disposition makes it especially important. Using gentle praise and rewards for desired behaviors encourages the best possible outcome with this breed.
