Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a friendly, gentle, and highly companionable breed. They love attention and will bond quickly with their owners. They are also a very intelligent breed and are very eager to please their humans. The breed originated in England during the 17th century and was typically favored as a royal dog by English nobility due to its beautiful coat and even temperament. Cavaliers have an extremely gentle nature and can make excellent family pets. They are an adaptable breed and enjoy being in the company of other pets, although they may prefer the company of their human family more.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sports a unique coat that is silky and long, yet light and fluffy. It's feathery texture gives it a soft and subtle look that makes the dog quite the eye-catcher! Its coat should be naturally straight or wavy and comes in four colors Blenheim, Tri-color, Black & Tan, and Ruby. They require frequent brushing for preventative care of the coat and skin. If not regularly groomed, tangles and mats can develop.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should be fed high-quality dry food, as well as occasional fresh food such as cooked chicken, boiled eggs, and small pieces of cooked vegetables. The amount of food should be adjusted to the individual dog's body type, however an average Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be fed two meals a day that are each equal to a quarter to a third of a cup. If a Cavalier is exhibiting signs of being overweight, any treats should be balanced with a decrease in the amount of their regular daily meals.
To prepare your home for welcoming a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, start by making sure all your chemicals, cleaners, and medications are stored in a safe spot away from reach. Also limit items like wires, electrical cords, and any small items that could be chewed. Puppies explore with their mouths, so anything that could cause a choking hazard should be kept away. Create a designated spot for your puppy to sleep, that's comfortable and away from high traffic areas. Make sure food and water dishes are accessible and clean.
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy generally reaches full size at one year of age. At that point, they typically range between 12-13 inches tall at the shoulder and typically weigh between 12-18 pounds. Many puppies grow at their own pace so it can be hard to predict how big your puppy will be in adulthood. If you are concerned about the potential size of your puppy, it may be helpful to talk to your breeder about the size of its parents and other relatives.
It is recommended that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels receive at least 30 minutes of walking per day. This can either be done in one single outing or split into multiple walks depending on the individual’s lifestyle and any other activities such as playing and training. To keep your Cavalier healthy, it is important to gradually build up to 30 minutes of walking, as going on longer walks too quickly can cause strain and stress on the dog’s joints.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are typically very sweet, gentle and loyal companions, making them great pets for families with kids of any age. They are known for their affectionate and playful natures, as well as their patience and adaptability, meaning they can be taught a wide range of doggy manners and behaviours. However, like most breeds, owners should be aware of any potential dangers associated with pets, or animals generally, and children should always be supervised in the presence of any animal.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have a long history of being bred and trained to be loyal, loving companions. As such, they have a great deal of intelligence and can be very easy to train, when provided with consistent and positive reinforcement and rewards. These smart pooches are often highly obedient and eager to please, which makes them pleasure to be around. Their loyal and affectionate nature also means that they can pick up on subtle changes in their family and react accordingly.
