Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are one of the oldest dog breeds, with records showing them as far back as the 16th century. They are incredibly playful and gentle dogs, making them perfect for families. They love to cuddle and are known to need lots of attention; they truly thrive when they're around their owners. They come in four different colors: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black & Tan. They are particularly known for their large, soulful eyes and luxurious long, silky coats.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a luxuriously silky and feathered coat of moderate length. This breed's trademark is its richly colored, feathered coat, which is usually brown and white, black and tan, ruby, or black and white. Its coat is fairly low maintenance, requiring regular brushing and the occasional bath. The breed's coat is longer in the ears, chest, legs, and the back of the neck. These dogs tend to look neat and tidy with their elegant, glossy coats.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically have similar dietary needs to other small-breed dogs. Generally, they require a diet of high-quality dry food formulated for small-breed dogs. If not, daily treats should be kept at a minimum as too much variety in their diet can lead to obesity. Additionally, a puppy should double his/her intake of food from 4 weeks to 10 weeks of age. The food should also be preferably grain-free in order to be gentle on the dog's stomach.
To properly prepare your home for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it's important to puppy-proof an area that your pup will have access to. Move any breakable or hazardous items out of reach and make sure all cleaning products are securely stored away. You should also provide a comfortable place for your pup to sleep such as a crate or bed, and designate an area where your pup can play and move around. Remember to always provide plenty of chew toys and treats to keep your pup occupied and entertained.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a small-sized breed with a maximum height of 13-14 inches (33-35 cm) and weight of 13-18 pounds (5.9-8.2 kg). While there is no standard size for the breed, the American Kennel Club (AKC) standards are that the ideal size would be 12-13 inches (30-33 cm) in height and a weight of 13-18 pounds (5.9-8.2 kg).
Every dog is different, but as a guideline, it is recommended that you walk your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for at least 30 minutes a day. If your dog is especially active, then you may want to increase the amount of minutes accordingly. However, it is important that you adjust the length and intensity of your walks to your own pet's needs. For example, certain Cavalier King Charles Spaniels may need more active pursuits than a brisk walk, while older dogs might need more moderate exercise.
