Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are well-loved for their gentle, loyal and outgoing personalities. These toy-breed Spaniels have a distinguished history as well, likely having descended from the King Charles Spaniels that were popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite their small size, these proud little dogs appear in a variety of colors, including tri-color (black and tan with white markings) and solid colors (black and ruby). They also come with easy-maintenance coats that only need minimal brushing.
While some people may believe that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are hypoallergenic, this is not the case. All dogs produce saliva and saliva proteins which are irritants to those who suffer from allergies. These proteins are most commonly found in the dander (dead skin flakes), urine, and fur of the dog. Therefore, no dog is truly hypoallergenic. Some breeds, however, tend to cause fewer allergic reactions in people than others do.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are relatively easy to feed, enjoying a high quality dry complete dog food with an occasional homemade meal added to their diet as a treat. A balanced diet including protein, carbohydrates and fats is important when deciding what to feed your Cavalier. They may also benefit from some plain boiled white or brown rice and vegetables. However, it is important to only give them plain vegetables without any salt, butter or other seasonings.
To adequately prepare your home for your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it's important to consider the type of environment that will support their natural needs. Start with setting up their bed in an area that feels safe and comfortable to them. Make sure to block off any areas of the house with the potential to be dangerous should they wander off. Additionally, stock up on appropriate-size toys and provide easy access to water and food so they can remain hydrated and energized.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered a small breed of dog and typically weigh between 13 to 18 pounds, with the males typically being slightly larger than the females. They are relatively short in stature and may grow to a maximum height of 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder. However, due to their compact and stocky body conformation, they often appear to be much larger than they actually are. Generally speaking, at maturity, a Cavalier will range between 11 to 14 inches tall, measured from their shoulder to the ground.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. They should be taken for regular walks, but playtime and fetch are also important for their overall physical and mental health. This breed loves to be active, so a combination of walks and longer playtimes will keep them healthy and happy. Taking them for a run or playing an outdoor game of fetch may be more appropriate for high-energy Cavaliers. When energy levels start to wane, provide a mentally stimulating activity such as interactive toys.
Absolutely! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for being affectionate and gentle, making them good family pets. They have an engaging and playful personality and enjoy being around people, especially children. This spaniel also tends to be loyal and eager to please its owners. They are relatively low maintenance and require minimal grooming, but can be prone to developing health issues, so regular veterinary care is important. Cavaliers love being around the family and need plenty of attention, exercise, and affection. They are easy to train and love to learn new tricks and take long walks with the family.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is generally considered to be relatively easy compared to other breeds due to its gentle and affectionate nature. As such, these dogs typically learn quickly and respond very well to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. It should, however, be noted that since the breed is known for its desire for companionship, it should never be left alone for extended periods of time. Consistent and patient training is important to ensure that your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is always behaving appropriately.
