Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have captivated pet lovers since the 1600s and they usually live a long life of around 12 to 15 years. This breed is known for their sweet and playful dispositions, and they are great companions for both children and adults. They also love to cuddle and are great lap dogs. Cavies come in four different coat colors Blenheim, Black & Tan, Tri-Color and Ruby and their coats require weekly brushing to maintain its softness.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's coat is typically silky, medium-length, and comes in a variety of colors including Blenheim (a mix of chestnut and white markings), tri-color (black, white, and tan markings), black and tan, and ruby. It is an undemanding breed in terms of grooming but should be brushed regularly as it has a tendency to form tangles. Known for its luxurious and glamorous look, the coat is also considered to be weatherproof.
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should have a balanced and nutritious diet to keep them in tip-top shape. High-quality dry food is the best way to ensure that you are providing your pup with the right balance of nutrients and flavours. Wet food can also be added as a tasty and nutritious alternative to the usual drab dry kibble. You can also provide a variety of healthy snacks and treats to provide enrichment and a treat every once in a while.
Preparation is key to ensure the success of your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Before bringing the pet into your home, it is important to invest in the necessary supplies. This includes food and water dishes, bedding, collar and leash, a comfortable and safe crate, toys, as well as heartworm, flea/tick, and other preventatives recommended by your vet. Additionally, it is beneficial to buy a card from your vet and make sure it is up to date with all necessary vaccinations.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, also known as "Cavs", are considered a small breed of dogs. The breed standard for an adult Cav can range from 12-13 inches for an adult at the withers (top of the shoulders) and typically weigh anywhere from 13-18 lbs. As Cavs are considered adults between the ages of 1-2 years, there will be a fair amount of additional growth and development during that period, so it's important to monitor their weight, diet and exercise routine.
Cavaliers King Charles Spaniels are active dogs, but not as active as some other breeds. They do need regular daily exercise to remain healthy, but it doesn't need to be for very long. They don't require intense physical activity and can be walked for 30 minutes at the most. They enjoy activities like running, playing fetch, exploring nature and going for car rides. Cavaliers need plenty of one-on-one attention in order to stay content and fulfill their role as companion dogs. They are intelligent and can learn various commands but may also require patience and repetition.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their loyalty and affection, making them excellent family dogs. They are gentle and well-mannered, with a friendly personality that makes them excellent companions. Cavaliers can keep up with children, with their love of play and energetic activity. They are small in size, making them easy to handle, and their moderate energy level means they don't require intense exercise or grooming, making them ideal for busy households. Their outgoing nature also makes them great around other pets, so the whole family can enjoy the presence of a Cavalier.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires patience and consistency. Begin with basic commands such as 'sit', 'down', 'come' and 'stay'. Start by rewarding desired behaviors with treats and praise. Use treats for positive reinforcement. Keep training sessions short and fun for both you and your pet by varying your activities. Once your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel reliably performs basic commands, move to more advanced training such as commands to help with loose leash walking and socialization with other animals or people. Incorporate activities in addition to the basic commands that stimulate his mind and body.
