Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are full of fun and personality! They are members of the Toy Group of breeds and are known for their long, silky coats and friendly, gentle natures. They are very lively and love to play, but they can be quite active for such a small breed. This is one of the few breeds that does not have a distinct bark rather, it has a low woof that can draw attention to itself and its owner.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not hypoallergenic. While those with allergies may find that their specific triggers are reduced when in contact with the breed, it does not guarantee that any allergic reaction will be completely avoided. While their coats are short, the Cavaliers still shed their fur and dander and will require regular maintenance such as brushing and bathing to keep the fur and dander levels as low as possible. In addition, they may cause allergic reactions due to their saliva and possibly their urine.
Yes, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have distinct dietary needs and particular dietary requirements due to their biologically unique combination of respiratory, digestive and musculo-skeletal problems. Because of these issues, a diet specially formulated for their needs is recommended. Food should be balanced, and contain proper amounts of fat, protein, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Proper nutrition is essential for all dogs, but even more so for Cavaliers, due to their delicate and vulnerable physical nature.
Preparing for a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be exciting yet overwhelming. Before bringing your new pup home, it's important to do a lot of research and planning. Make sure you get an appropriate cage and/or items for playtime, like toys and chew treats. Buy food and supplies from a quality pet store, specifically items suited to your pup's age and size. Additionally, brush up on basic obedience commands, since this puppy will need to learn them right away. Be sure to make a vet appointment soon, so you can get your pup started on a health plan.
Generally, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels reach full size by one year of age. On average, their adult size is approximately 12-13 inches tall at the shoulder and between 13-18 pounds when fully grown, although slight variation within those size ranges is not uncommon for the breed. It is important to keep in mind that these measurements – or any others – should not be used to determine a puppy's size since there is no standard size for the breed.
It's recommended that a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should get 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. Divide this time up into two or three walks per day, and make sure all walks are varied. If you are able, take your pup to a nearby park or walkway where they can enjoy their daily exercise. Just make sure the environment is safe, and that your pup has plenty of time for play. Also, it's important to remember to not over-exert the breed by walking them for too long, or in hot and humid weather.
Certainly! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are excellent additions to any family. They are highly intelligent, loyal and affectionate dogs that can do well with people of all ages. They are also incredibly friendly, which makes them perfect companions for families with children. These playful little pooches love to run, play and explore with their families, and their sweet nature makes them great lap dogs too. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are content to live in apartments, too, meaning they can be a great fit to any home.
Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be quite easy or difficult depending on your experience level. If this is your first time owning a dog, then the training process may be a bit more difficult for you, but it is by no means impossible. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are intelligent, willing to please, and respond positively to positive reinforcement. However, it is essential to establish clear boundaries, stay consistent, and provide plenty of positive reinforcement for desired behaviors. Regular and consistent training sessions in short intervals should be done to reinforce desired behaviors and help create a bond between you and your dog.
