Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are cheerful, playful and affectionate companions. They're known for having a gentle and dignified presence, as well as for being obedient. Did you know that Cavaliers generally weigh between 13 and 18 pounds? While they may seem small, they have a lot of energy and require daily exercise. Some owners cut their dogs' fur short to make it easier to groom. Cavaliers actually have a number of different coat colors, including black and tan, ruby, tri-colored and blenheim. They can also have a wide range of white markings.
While the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does not have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, there is evidence that suggests that these dogs may be better suited for some owners who have allergies. They do produce dander, which is a major allergen for many people, however their fur is primarily feathery and naturally contains very little oil which makes allergies less likely. Although the exact cause of allergies is unknown, this type of fur may contribute to fewer allergy symptoms when compared to other breeds of dogs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do best on a high-quality kibble diet that is specially formulated for their size and activity level. For example, these pups can benefit from a diet that includes lean animal proteins as its main ingredients, such as chicken, fish, turkey, or lamb, with added sources of omega-3 fatty acids like flaxseed oil and fatty fish. They also should have adequate amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables to help keep their digestive system functioning properly.
Preparing your home for your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! First and foremost, make sure you have gathered all the essential items your pup will need, like a comfortable dog bed, toys tailored to your pup, proper food and treats, and a few basic grooming supplies. It is also important to puppy proof your home, making sure all cords, plants, food and other items are inaccessible to your furry companion. Additionally, it's important to create a safe space for your pup to retreat to if needed.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically reach a height of 12-13 inches and weigh in between 11-20 pounds. They are a smaller breed and the AKC standard states that the height should not exceed 13 inches when measured from the shoulder. Depending on the gender, males typically will reach the upper end of the weight range while females will be slightly less. This small size makes the Cavaliers an ideal house pet.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, like all other breeds of dog, need regular exercise and playtime to ensure their health and happiness. They are an agile and energetic breed with a general tendency towards liveliness and an affinity for walks and play. The amount of exercise your specific dog will need will depend upon their age and energy levels; an adult Cav needs around an hour a day of exercise, including walks, fetch games, and/or trips to the dog park. Puppies, of course, are likely to require more.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are highly intelligent dogs and can complete many different tasks with proper training. They are excellent problem solvers, especially when motivated by food, and have the ability to learn commands quickly and remember them for long periods of time. In addition, these dogs form strong bonds with their owners and are highly resourceful when it comes to finding new ways to get attention and show affection. Their empathetic nature and loyalty make them promising candidates for service dogs and therapy dogs as well.
