Questions & Answers
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a well-loved breed of small dogs that were nicknamed "comforter spaniels" in the 16th century because of the affection they showed to their owners. They are a friendly breed that lovers of all kinds of animals can appreciate. Some fun facts about this breed include that they have a lifespan of between 9-14 years, although some have lived up to 18 years. They're also known to be great travelers and are generally good with other animals and kids.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is widely known for its long, silky, and wavy coat. Depending on the colors, it can range from a light tan to a deep ruby-red. Its long ears are often fringed with feathery fur, while its face is covered with smooth hair. While their fur is very soft and short, these dogs do require regular brushing to keep its coat healthy. Additionally, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel needs periodic trimmings to make sure its fur stays looking perfect.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a balanced and nutritious diet that caters to their species-specific needs. For an adult dog, it is best to feed them a high-quality dog food that is formulated for small-breed dogs. This type of food provides protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients as recommended by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. It is important to feed your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at regular intervals and never over-feeding them.
Before bringing your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel home, make sure your home is optimized for their needs. Make sure you have all the basic items they need such as food and water dishes, a bed, toys, and treats. Avoid placing items at low levels, as Cavaliers are prone to chewing. Create a separate space for your puppy that is off limits to other pets and children. Set up baby gates where needed to prevent the pup from roaming. Additionally, check that all of your plants and flowers are non-toxic in case your pup decides to nibble.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in four different sizes, categorized by height. Toy size stands at 10-12 inches, while miniature size stands at 12-13 inches. Smaller size can stand as high as 13-14 inches, and larger size can stand as high as 14-15 inches. It is important to note that these are only averages; individual dogs may range outside these sizes. As a result, when selecting a puppy, the height should be measured.
An adult Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should get around thirty minutes to an hour of exercise each day. To avoid overexerting the dog, we recommend breaking it up into two or three shorter walks of fifteen to twenty minutes each. Additionally, you may include some additional playtime in the backyard, in a dog park, or at a nearby trail. If your pup is a puppy, you'll want to start slowly, as their joints and bones will still be growing and under development for the first five to six months.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make excellent family dogs! With their gentle and loving nature, they are sure to bring lots of joy to their humans. They enjoy spending time with their owners and are generally very social, so they can be great companions, even if the family is away from the house. These sweet dogs are great with children, so even very young children can spend time with them safely. Additionally, they are active enough to keep up with family activities and are small enough to take on vacation.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a breed of smart and loyal companion dogs. These intelligent dogs can learn basic commands and commands specific to agility or freestyle competitions. They interact very well with people and love to please their owners, making them excellent family pets. They are a curious breed, often seeking out people for attention and puzzling over their environment. With the right training and patient guidance, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can become highly responsive dogs, responding to verbal cues and hand signals with enthusiasm.
