Questions & Answers
A Cavapoo is a designer breed, created by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. Generally Cavapoos are loving and loyal, making them an ideal pet for all kinds of families. They are highly intelligent and social, meaning they tend to get along with people and other animals. With their small size, they are also perfect for apartments and other smaller homes. Cavapoos are low- to non-shedding, and are often hypoallergenic, making them a great option for people with allergies.
The Cavapoo is known for its soft and dense double coat, which is a mix of both its Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parents' coats. The Cavapoo typically has features of both breeds, resulting in a long, wavy coat that can range anywhere from a light beige, to cream and reddish brown tones. The Cavapoo's coat is typically wavy, with a soft and silky-feeling undercoat that is made unique by its longer, looser curls or cords.
While there is no such thing as any completely hypoallergenic dog breed, Cavapoo puppies do have significantly less dander and shed far less than most breeds, making them a better choice for those with allergies. Along with their modest shedding and dander, the hybrid Cavapoo will come with a non-shedding and hypo-allergenic coat due to the poodle side of their lineage, meaning that most people with mild allergies won't have quite as much of an issue.
Preparing for your Cavapoo’s arrival should include both preparing your home for the dog and your personal preparation. Firstly, make sure you have a vet or a groomer who is familiar with the breed, as Cavapoos have specific needs when it comes to health and grooming. Acquire all the necessary supplies, such as a crate, toys, bed, food, grooming items, and other items.
Training a Cavapoo puppy should begin as soon as possible, as this breed of dog is known to be highly intelligent and eager to please its owner. To start, the puppy should be taught basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Consistency is key when it comes to training Cavapoo puppies; reinforcing the same commands in the same manner with treats and rewards for good behavior will help ensure the puppy learns quickly. This breed also does well with clicker training, as it helps to clearly differentiate between desired and undesired behaviors.
Cavapoos are intelligent and energetic dogs, so they need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Unfortunately, they are also incredibly small and delicate, so it is important to take extra care to make sure the exercise is tailored to their size and breed. For adults, a minimum of two 30-minute walks each day is recommended to keep them healthy and happy, as well as providing various forms of mental and physical stimulation throughout the day. Various activities, such as agility training and playtime in the yard or park, are also beneficial for this breed.
Cavapoos are usually excellent family dogs and are especially good with children. Cavapoos have gentle and loving temperaments, so they tend to make great bond with kids. They are usually eager to please and make wonderful therapy or service dogs. Cavapoos can be surprisingly patient and enjoy playing with children and also with other smaller pets. They are very friendly and affectionate, so they thrive when they get enough love and attention from their families. Cavapoos are highly intelligent and can learn simple commands from an early age, so their obedience training is typically quite successful.
The main difference between an F1b, F2, and any 'generational' Cavapoo lies in the type of coat they have. An F1b Cavapoo is the result of breeding a Cavoodle (or Cavapoo) with a Poodle. They are considered to be 75% Poodle and 25% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These Cavapoos typically have a very curly, wavy coat with only minimal shedding, making them more suitable for those with allergies.
