Questions & Answers
A Cavapoo is a relatively new hybrid crossbreed of the much-loved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. This crossbreed is usually bred in order to combine the outgoing, friendly, and loving nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligence of the Poodle, resulting in a pet that is full of intelligence and goofiness. Generally, they are small-to-medium sized dogs and will weigh around 18-22 pounds when fully grown. Cavapoos tend to have a short and silky coat, making them easy to groom.
The Cavapoo's coat is generally a combination of its parent breeds, the Poodle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Typically, the coat will be curly and even wavy, like the Poodle's coat, but of a medium texture like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's coat. Many will have flecks of dark hair mixed in among the lighter shades, creating a parti-color effect. In terms of length, the coat is usually quite short, reaching anywhere from a half an inch to two inches in length.
While Cavapoo puppies are considered to be hypoallergenic, this doesn’t always mean they are totally safe for those with allergies. It is important to be aware that all dogs produce some level of allergens. Cavapoo puppies have a coat which is low-shedding, making it less likely for allergens to travel into the air. That being said, each Cavapoo is different and some may produce more allergens than others.
When preparing to bring a Cavapoo into your home it is important to ensure that you have all the necessities for your pup. First, set up a comfortable and secure space for your pup. This could be a crate or a cozy corner with their own bedding. Make sure to stock up on food and treats specifically designed for puppies as well as dishes for food and water. Additionally, create a consistent potty schedule, taking your pup outside as often as possible to establish a routine.
The best way to train a Cavapoo puppy is to focus on positive reinforcement methods. Begin by setting boundaries and expectations, and consistently rewarding desired behaviors with verbal praise and treats when they are met. Aim to keep training sessions short and fun, and avoid punishments which may increase fear or anxiety, as Cavapoos are very sensitive. Focus on teaching key commands such as “sit”, “stay”, “come” and “leave it”, as well as behaviors necessary for good manners such as self-control and being gentle.
Cavapoos are a hybrid breed of Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, meaning they may inherit either breed's level of energy. Since Cavapoos are known to be active and intelligent, they need a significant amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. An adult Cavapoo should typically get anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours of exercise per day, split up throughout the day. Long daily walks and playtime in the yard are great ways to get your Cavapoo moving, as well as interactive games such as hide and seek and fetch.
Cavapoos are one of the best breeds for families with children. They are warm, loving, friendly and playful so kids can have tons of fun with them. Cavapoos are also intelligent and eager to please, so they can be easily trained to get along with kids and follow basic commands. Cavapoos make excellent watchdogs, since they are alert and will bark if an intruder is nearby. They have a gentle, loving nature, which makes them loyal companions for any child. This breed is also very easy to groom, as they only require minimal brushing and occasional trims.
The major difference between f1b and other Cavapoo generations like F2 is that in f1b, both the parents of the puppy are hybrid dogs (the mother is a Poodle mixed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and the father is a full Poodle). The resulting puppy will be more predictable when it comes to shedding, temperament, and size. F2 puppies are the result of two f1b dogs being bred, which means that some of the predictability of the f1b cross is lost.
