A Cavapoo is a hybrid resulting from crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle. Cavapoos typically grow to be a small-to-medium size dog and can range from 10-25 pounds. They boast a lifespan of 12-15 years and do not shed as much as other breeds, making them an ideal companion for individuals with allergies. Cavapoos are incredibly intelligent and tend to be quite affectionate; they form strong bonds with their humans and make excellent family pets.
The Cavapoo’s coat can vary from dog to dog, depending on their parents’ heritage. Generally, the coat of a Cavapoo is medium to long, soft, and thick with a slight wave. It can range from a straight coat to a short curl, with the softness of their coat coming from it being a combination of both their Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parents. The colour of the coat can vary, with some sport classic shades of black, red, or white, while others may have a mix of more than one coat colour.
Cavapoo puppies are classified as a hypoallergenic breed, meaning they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction for someone with an allergy-sensitive lifestyle. This isn't to say that absolutely no allergic reaction can occur, as some Cavapoo puppies may have inherited coat types from their parent breeds that still contain some allergy-causing proteins. However, the combination of the Cavoodle’s coat, which is single-layered, silky and low-shed, and their hybrid vigor, makes them a very beneficial choice for those with allergies.
There are many steps you can take to prepare for the arrival of a Cavapoo. Firstly, create a safe, comfortable environment for your pet. Make sure that any hazardous items, including outlet covers and chemicals, are stored away safely. Set up a crate and dog bed with soft, comfortable bedding and familiar toys. Ensure that the house is pet-friendly by blocking off areas that the pet will not be allowed to access. Make sure the flooring and rugs are non-slip, as Cavapoos are prone to slipping.
The best way to train a Cavapoo puppy is to get started as early as possible. You should have a consistent routine for feeding, sleeping, and playing time. Spend lots of time with your puppy and use positive reinforcement whenever possible. Reward your pup with verbal praise, affection, and treats for a job well done. Provide your pup with plenty of opportunities to learn, such as enrolling them in a puppy school or obedience class. This will give your pup a chance to gain important socialization skills and prepare them for more advanced training.
Cavapoos are a great breed of dog because they are so active and require a significant amount of exercise. On average, they need an hour or two of exercise per day. The main difference between the various generations of Cavapoos (F1, F1b, F2, etc.) is the amount of genetic diversity that is present between the parents. F1 Cavapoos are made up of one purebred Poodle parent and one purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent. F1b Cavapoos have one parent that is a purebred Poodle, and one parent that is an F1 Cavapoo.
