Questions & Answers
A Cavapoo is an excellent companion, ideal for families and individuals alike. This hybrid dog breed is a combination of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle, offering the best of both worlds. Cavapoos are known for their intelligence and affectionate personalities, making them great family pets. They are a small breed and usually weigh between 10 and 20 pounds, although some larger mixes can be found. While they do require daily exercise, Cavapoos are also content with a moderate amount of activity and lots of love and attention from their owners.
The Cavapoo's coat is generally soft and fluffy, often resembling a teddy bear! Depending on the parent breeds, Cavapoos can have single coats (like Poodles) or double coats (like Cavaliers), with anywhere from sparse to thick fur. These coats can come in many different colors, such as white, cream, apricot, black, chocolate, sable, and even tricolor. Although their coats can be high-maintenance, they are very luxurious and beautiful.
Generally, Cavapoo puppies are considered a hypoallergenic breed, but it is important to note that there is no guarantee that a Cavapoo puppy will be 100% hypoallergenic. It all depends on the breed of the parent puppies, as Cavapoos are usually a cross between a purebred Poodle and a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Some puppies may inherit the Poodle's coat with its high degree of non-shedding, while some may have more of the shed-prone Cavalier King Charles Spaniel coat.
Preparing for your Cavapoo’s arrival should start at least four to six weeks in advance. As a start, create a safe and comfortable space for your puppy, including providing a crate, bedding, and toys for them to enjoy. It is also important to ensure your home is puppy-proofed: move any hazardous items out of their reach and make sure there are no loose wires or toxic plants/chemicals. Additionally, purchase their food and any other necessary supplies, including collar and leash, to ensure they have everything they need upon their arrival.
The best way to train a Cavapoo puppy is to use positive reinforcement techniques, such as tasty treats or vocal praise after successful completion of requested behaviors. Cavapoos are highly intelligent and respond best to patient, gentle training sessions. Additionally, identify and enforce the limits of acceptable behaviors for your puppy. This encourages your pup to understand and align to the expectations that have been set. Be consistent, provide plenty of guidance and ensure that the training sessions are enjoyable and rewarding. Start by teaching basic commands, such as 'sit', 'come', 'down', and 'stay'.
Cavapoos generally need one to two hours of exercise every day. This amount may vary depending on the age and health of the dog. Exercise can include walks, runs, and playtime. Moderate to vigorous exercise is best, including activities such as swimming and fetch. Additionally, mentally stimulating activities, such as interactive games and puzzle solving, can help keep your Cavapoo happy and engaged. To ensure that your Cavapoo is getting enough exercise, monitor your pet's behaviors and monitor whether they seem to enjoy their physical activity.
Cavapoos are generally excellent with children, as they are a mix between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (classified as a toy breed) and the Poodle (considered very intelligent). They are loyal, affectionate, and easy to train. Cavapoos are known for their gentle, adaptable, and playful nature, making them a great companion for children. They can be protective of their family, but should be socialized early on to have good interaction with kids and strangers.
The main difference between f1b, F2, etc. when it comes to Cavapoos is the ratio of genes inherited from the two purebred parent breeds. An F1 Cavapoo is the result of crossing a purebred Poodle with a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. An F1b Cavapoo is the result of crossing an F1 Cavapoo with either a Poodle or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This resulting Cavapoo is more likely to have a non-shedding coat.
