A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized, large-hearted dog known for its devotion, intelligence and loving disposition. Bred as gundogs, they are excellent family companions as they are reliable, trustworthy, and intensely loyal. Golden Retrievers display an enthusiastic zest for life and simply enjoy being around people and other animals. They need lots of exercise, playtime and affection to thrive. The Golden Retriever coat is beautiful and silky smooth. It is typically double-layered and water-repellant with a thick, straight outer coat and a softer, denser undercoat. The outer coat is generally anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 inches in length and varies in shades of gold, depending on the particular dog. The feet and muzzle are usually slightly lighter than the main body, and often mantles and white markings are present at the chest, neck, and/or legs.
A Golden Retriever is a very active and energetic breed and so its diet should be able to meet its nutritional needs. An ideal diet for a Golden Retriever should include a balance of cooked or raw meat, fresh vegetables, grain free kibble, cottage cheese, and fresh fruit. Give plenty of fresh, clean water to your Golden Retriever as they will need it to help keep their hydrated. Aim to create a daily feeding routine as they need regular meals to help them stay healthy.
While you wait for your Golden Retriever, the best way to prepare yourself for being a good puppy parent is to do your research! Read books and articles about Golden Retrievers, dog training, nutrition, and puppy caring to make sure you're as prepared as possible when your pup arrives. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the laws and rules surrounding dog ownership in your specific area. Lastly, consider puppy classes so you and your furry companion can form a strong bond.
Golden Retrievers typically come in a size range between 21 to 24 inches in height and weigh between 65 to 75 pounds. However, there has been a large number of individuals outside this range due to the long process of selective breeding. Breeding can produce larger individuals, such as, dogs that are 27 to 32 inches tall and weigh in excess of 90 pounds. There have even been cases of smaller golden retrievers than the typical range, especially when smaller female dogs are bred with the larger males, producing a mid-size dog.
Generally, a Golden Retriever should have around an hour of walking each day. This ensures it remains healthy and gets the mental and physical stimulation it needs. If you just take your dog out for a quick walk, the time should be around 45 minutes. However, take into account the weather on very hot or cold days your dog should have shorter walks. A good rule of thumb is to make sure they have around 30 minutes of walking on top of swimming sessions or other exercise if your dog is an active breed. Generally, an hour is ideal to keep your pup healthy and happy.
Golden Retrievers are excellent companions for children! These intelligent, loyal dogs are known to be friendly and eager to please, making them an ideal pet for children and adults alike. Their gentle temperament and loving nature are perfect for many families, giving kids a reliable and protective friend to play with. Golden Retrievers are gentle and get along well with other people, children included. They can often be responsive to commands, which could be especially useful for puppies in early training or kids who are unfamiliar with caring for a pet.
Training your Golden Retriever should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. Start by teaching your pup basic obedience commands such as Sit, Stay, Come, and Heel. Introducing these commands in a positive, reward-based way rather than by force will help ensure success. Additionally, be sure to give your pup plenty of positive reinforcement when he follows a command correctly. Be consistent with the commands and timing so your pup knows exactly what behavior is expected of him. As he progresses, you can introduce more complex exercises to further challenge your pup's mind.
