Questions & Answers
A Golden Retriever is an intelligent and friendly breed of dog that loves to please its owners. They are renowned for their playful, gentle temperament and loyalty to their people. Ideal for families, Golden Retrievers thrive in most environments. They are active and energetic, yet respond well to training and are easy to manage. Generally healthy, the breed does have a tendency for potential hip and joint concerns, so you should be mindful of their overall activity level. Golden Retrievers also have a love for water and the outdoors, making them the perfect walking and jogging companion.
The coat of the Golden Retriever is quite unique, boasting a straight and water-repellent outercoat with a soft and dense undercoat. Generally, their coats appear a deep gold color, but they may also be lighter in shades such as cream or dark red. This particular type of coat is notorious for its water-resistance, allowing them to venture safely into ponds, rivers, or any other body of water.
Your Golden Retriever will need a balanced and nutritious diet that includes a variety of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. The majority of their diet should come from high quality, commercial dog food. You may also choose to supplement their diet with occasional fresh batches of raw meat, vegetables, eggs, and rice. In addition, provide your Golden Retriever plenty of fresh, clean drinking water each day. Depending on their age, amount of exercise they get, and overall health, their caloric needs may vary, so it is important to consult with your veterinarian when deciding what to feed them.
Prepare your home for a new Golden Retriever by first making sure you have all the supplies you need. Provide clean bowls for food and water, plenty of toys to keep them entertained, and a collar and leash for walks. Also, choose a designated spot in your home for your pup to sleep since Golden Retrievers need lots of rest. Next, create a safe and comfortable space for your pet. Set up baby gates to keep them from entering areas of the home that are not designated for your pup.
Golden Retrievers typically come in two size varieties: Standard and Miniature. Standard Golden Retrievers usually stand at anywhere from 21.5-24 inches tall and can weigh between 55-75 pounds. Miniature Golden Retrievers, despite the name, are not actually a separate breed. They are the result of breeding two Standard Golden Retrievers of different sizes, and can typically stand between 13-20 inches tall and weigh between 30-45 pounds. Since Miniature Golden Retrievers are not a true breed, it is impossible to give exact measurements on size and weight.
Every Golden Retriever is different, but as a rule of thumb, a healthy adult Golden Retriever should get at least one hour of exercise every day. If you can devote 30 minutes of time to walking your Golden Retriever outdoors, that would be ideal. If that's not possible, then you should try to devote at least 15 minutes to a brisk walk, run or game of fetch within your backyard or local dog park.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers have a wonderful, comforting presence and they make excellent family pets. They are extremely loyal, loving, and patient, so they are great with children. They are also highly intelligent, so they require mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. They make great watchdogs, and their easily trainable disposition means house-training will come relatively easy. Golden Retrievers are people-pleasers, so they may suffer from separation anxiety when left home alone, but will love nothing more than "helping" with anything you or your family is doing.
The best way to train your Golden Retriever is to ensure consistent rules, structure, and boundaries. Begin training at an early age by establishing yourself as a consistent and firm leader. Utilize positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, to encourage behaviors you wish your pet to associate with good behaviors. Teach basic commands such as sit, stay, come, heel, and down while also developing obedience level behaviors. You can also look into basic agility or puppy school to further your pet's training. Exercise and socialization are also important components of training.
