Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are one of the most recognizable and friendly breeds around! They were originally bred to help with hunting and retrieving game, hence their "Golden" name. They are incredibly intelligent, social, and devoted dogs, making them great companions as well as working dogs. Fun facts about Golden Retrievers include the fact that they are highly trainable and they are natural swimmers, making them great retrievers of aquatic furbabies. They also have a double coat that's waterproof, which helps them stay warm and comfortable when swimming in cold water.
Golden Retrievers do shed, although the amount of shedding can vary from dog to dog. Generally, Golden Retrievers have a medium-length coat that requires regular brushing and occasional bathing. The good news is that the Golden Retriever breed is known for their easy maintenance when compared to other breeds that require more frequent grooming. Even though Golden Retrievers do shed, their short fine hair usually fails to create a mess so they are considered to be "low-shedding.
Golden Retrievers have hearty appetites and require nutrient-dense food suited to their small to medium size and active lifestyle. Be mindful of their dietary needs and make sure their diet is rich in proteins and nutrients, whole grains and healthy fats. Avoid artificial preservatives and colourings, excessive sugar and salt, and fillers. High-quality dry food designed specifically for Golden Retrievers is best, but they'll also benefit from the occasional treat. Supplement their diet with age-appropriate FDAapproved human-grade raw or frozen meats, fruits and vegetables.
Whether you are thinking about adopting a new Golden Retriever or are already getting ready to welcome one into your home, preparation is key! Before getting your new pup, you should equip your home with basic items such as a collar and a leash, a crate and/or play pen, food and water bowls, food and treats, bedding, cleaning supplies, and all necessary paperwork. Additionally, it is essential to research and find quality veterinary care, an obedience class, and start puppy-proofing household areas your pup may explore.
Golden Retrievers typically come in a medium size, however there are some dogs that are larger or smaller than the standard size. Depending on the parents, puppies can range anywhere from 21 to 24 inches in height and between 50-90 pounds in weight. Some Golden Retrievers are classified as Giant, reaching around 29-30 inches in size or up to 100 or more pounds. While there is no classification for a miniature or toy-sized breed, breeders sometimes breed smaller litters that produce puppies as small as 20-30 pounds or less.
The exact amount of minutes per day you should walk your Golden Retriever will depend on their age, size, and overall health. Generally speaking, the American Kennel Club recommends exercising your Golden Retriever for at least 30 to 45 minutes each day. You can split this time into two or three shorter exercise periods if desired. Providing adequate outdoor or indoor exercise is important for maintaining your Golden Retriever's optimal health and can help prevent behavioral problems.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are excellent family companions. They are incredibly loyal, intelligent, and eager to please which makes them a great fit for life within a household. Goldens are affectionate and patient, making them perfect for homes with children. Not only are Golden Retrievers warm and loving, they are also very playful and lighthearted, providing hours of entertainment, companionship, and joy. As long as they receive appropriate exercise, they tend to behave well in almost any situation and they almost always get along well with other family members.
Training a Golden Retriever is an exciting and rewarding experience. The most important part of the process is to establish a bond of trust and respect between yourself and your pet. Consistency is essential in any form of training, and it takes patience, perseverance and dedication to teach your pup how to behave properly. The best approach is to divide the training into steps, such as getting your Retriever used to the most basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come'.
