Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are incredibly loyal and friendly dogs. Though they have a long and silky coat, they still manage to come in many different colors like cream, golden and mahogany! Golden Retrievers have a tendency to become quite attached to their owners and love learning new things, especially when their owners use positive reinforcement. They can also become very devoted to children and make excellent family dogs. In terms of intelligence, these retrievers are very smart, ranking among the top 5 out of the 150 most intelligent dog breeds.
Golden Retrievers are not hypoallergenic. They carry the potential for dander, saliva, and other allergy-causing substances that can prompt an allergic reaction in those with an allergy to dogs. Despite this, Golden Retrievers have been known to produce fewer allergens than other breeds and can sometimes be the preferred choice of people with allergies. In some cases, those with mild allergies can actually own a Golden Retriever if they are able to take certain precautions, such as having air conditioning, regular baths, and frequent grooming.
Golden Retrievers are intelligent and active dogs that require a balanced diet to stay in optimum health. Generally, they should be fed a food that is high in protein to aid in muscle growth and development, as well as complex carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals. It is important to feed them a diet that is specifically formulated for their age, size, and activity level. Dry kibble is often the most convenient for feeding and many owners add in some canned or fresh meat for variety. Treats and table scraps should be fed sparingly and never in excess.
Prepare for your new Golden Retriever by ensuring you have the necessary supplies on hand. Be sure to pick up a high-quality food, a bed or crate, a collar and harness, a leash, chew toys and interactive games, and plenty of treats. Have an area of your home where your pup can relax and feel safe that they can call their own. Puppy-proof your home by making sure electrical cords and household plants or items they could chew on are out of their reach.
A full-grown adult Golden Retriever typically ranges in size between 20-24 inches in height and can weigh anywhere between 55 and 75 lbs. However, since puppies can vary quite a bit in size it can be challenging to gauge how big they will eventually be. Generally, puppies almost double their weight in their first few months and then usually reach their adult size around 18 to 24 months old. Other factors such as genetics and diet can also affect the size at which your Golden Retriever puppy matures.
Golden Retrievers need a good amount of exercise to stay happy and healthy. On average, these playful pooches should get about an hour of exercise each day that includes a combination of long walks, runs, and playtime. The type of exercise and duration will depend on your dog's age, size, and overall health. Puppies, for instance, will require less intensive exercise than adults as they are still developing, while older dogs might need shorter, less strenuous activities.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are well known for their kind and gentle nature, making them an ideal companion for children. These dogs make superb family pets and often form incredibly strong bonds with their human family members. Because of their exceptional intelligence, they can easily be trained and heavily enjoy playing with children. Golden Retrievers are eager to please and often seek out physical affection; this only adds to their ability to build loving relationships with children.
Training a Golden Retriever does not have to be a difficult task, but it does require commitment and consistency. This breed of dog is highly intelligent, so positive reinforcement and reward-based training can yield promising results. With enough patience and a willingness to spend time consistently training your dog, you can certainly expect to see positive results. It is important to remember that different dogs learn at different rates, so training your Golden Retriever will require patience.
