Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in the United States due to their incredibly loving and gentle nature. They are most known for their intelligence and loyalty, which makes them an excellent choice for companionship and service. Golden Retrievers are very active, and love being outdoors. Surprisingly, these pets were originally bred to help with waterfowl hunting and helped retrieve shot birds from the cold waters. Additionally, it is often thought that the original Golden Retriever was a mix of a Water Spaniel, a Tweed Water Spaniel, a Newfoundland, and a Bloodhound.
Golden Retrievers are not considered to be non-shedding, unfortunately. But, this does not mean that you need to avoid them if you're looking for a low-shedding pet. Because of their medium-long coat, Golden Retrievers do shed and require regular brushing, but their coats are low-maintenance enough that they require a minimal amount of grooming and do not need to be clipped frequently, like a Poodle may need.
Golden Retrievers do have special dietary needs. For instance, they can be prone to obesity due to their high-energy lifestyles, so a lower-calorie diet is often beneficial. Their breed is also known to suffer from joint and stomach issues, which can be resolved through products that specifically target these ailments. A quality food with balanced calcium and phosphorus content is also an important part of their diet, as Golden Retrievers may have difficulty properly metabolizing these minerals.
Prior to bringing your new Golden Retriever home, it's important to prepare your home to ensure a safe and happy environment for your pup. Start by baby-proofing your home, by choosing pet-friendly cleaning products, and by securing any furniture or household items that could be dangerous for your pup to get into. Designate an area for your pup to sleep, providing a comfortable bed and warm blankets. Get the necessary supplies like food, water and food bowls, treats, a leash and collar, and puppy-safe toys and chews.
Golden Retrievers come in a variety of sizes, ranging from a smaller "Toy" size up to a larger "Giant" size. The Toy and Giant sizes are considered to be within the extremes of the breed standard size range and are recognized by many kennel clubs. More commonly, however, Golden Retrievers are found in three sizes which include the Small, Medium and Standard size, the latter of which is officially recognized by the AKC.
Generally speaking, your Golden Retriever should get at least 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. It is recommended to divide this up into multiple daily walks to ensure that they are getting enough exercise. During these walks, be sure to let them explore and sniff, as it helps to stimulate their senses and keeps them engaged mentally. Vary their walks to keep them entertained and interested, go to different places and extend the walk if they seem to still have energy.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved breeds for family life. They are incredibly intelligent, loyal, and affectionate, making them the perfect option for households of all sizes. A Golden Retriever's temperament is well-suited to family life and they can quickly become part of the family structure. They are excellent with children, have strong social skills, and have a gentle and calm demeanor. Golden Retrievers are also highly trainable, meaning that they can learn to fit in with your family's lifestyle and do their best to please you.
Training your Golden Retriever is an important part of helping them become a loyal, obedient, and well-adjusted pet. A good rule of thumb when it comes to training is to start with basic commands such as "sit", "stay", "come", and "heel", as these are the most important commands every dog should know. It's also important to use positive reinforcement and reward your dog with treats when they complete the task correctly. Begin slowly and gradually increase the difficulty. Repetition and consistency are key when consistently training your Golden Retriever.
