Questions & Answers
Golden Retrievers have been around since the early 1800s, when they were bred to easily retrieve game during hunting trips. These doting dogs are known for being gentle, devoted and intelligent, making them the perfect pet for families with children. Interestingly, Golden Retrievers can learn up to 300 words and follow commands up to 30 yards away. In 1970, President Nixon even owned a Golden Retriever and took it for a walk on the White House lawn. These pups are also avid swimmers and need to exercise daily.
While Golden Retrievers are not technically hypoallergenic, they are still considered to be one of the best breeds for people who suffer from allergies. Their coats tend to be rather short as compared to many other breeds, so they don't irritate allergies as much. Additionally, they don't shed excessively or produce dander, which are both common sources of allergies. While Golden Retrievers can't guarantee complete allergy relief, they still offer a reduction in allergy-triggering materials, making them a great choice for someone with allergies.
It is important to feed your Golden Retriever the right food to promote their health and wellbeing. Generally a diet of dry kibble combined with wet canned food is recommended. If a high-quality dry food is used, supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals may not be necessary. Whichever food you choose, make sure it is tailored to the specific needs of your retriever, such as their age, activity level, weight and health status.
Before bringing your new Golden Retriever home, it is important to make sure you have done all you can to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for them. First, be sure to childproof any areas your pup may be able to access. This can include taking away small items or objects that may be accidentally swallowed, making sure windows and balcony doors are blocked off and keeping medications or toxic items out of reach. Next, invest in some puppy-proof furniture and bedding that is both cozy and highly durable.
Golden Retrievers come in a variety of sizes from extra small to extra large, which vary depending on the breed and the specific characteristics of the dog. Generally, the smaller sizes usually weigh about 40 to 55 pounds and stand about 20 to 24 inches tall. On the other hand, the larger sizes usually weigh about 60 to 90 pounds and stand about 24 to 26 inches tall. Furthermore, size can often be an individual trait based on the environment and genetics that the particular dog is born into.
Golden Retrievers are an active breed and need plenty of exercise every day to stay healthy and happy. Generally, experts recommend at least one hour of daily exercise for the breed, which can be broken up into several sessions. Exercise should include activities such as jogging, running, playing fetch, swimming, agility, or taking your Golden for a long walk or hike. Mixing in obedience training or a challenging game of mental enrichment can also help keep your Retriever's mind active.
Absolutely! Golden Retrievers are excellent family dogs. They are loyal and very friendly to people of all ages, making them great companion pets. They enjoy being around people and have a good temperament, making them great playmates for children. These intelligent breeds are also easily trainable and can learn basic commands in a short amount of time. Additionally, they have an overall low-maintenance coat, so they don't require much grooming. On top of that, they thrive off of physical and mental stimulation, making them a great source of exercise.
Training a Golden Retriever can vary it can be both easy and difficult depending on the individual dog and their level of responsiveness. It is important to have a positive attitude and consistency when training any breed. Usually, Golden Retrievers are extremely smart, making them fairly easy to train. With the right strategies, patience and respect, training can be a rewarding experience. Be sure to start early and always reward good behavior. Keeping training sessions short and consistent is key to success.
