Questions & Answers
Did you know that the Havaneses was originally bred to catch rodents in Cuba? This breed of toy dogs can be traced back to the 1300s and is said to be a combination of the breed Bichon, a Canary Island dog, and the Poodle. They are also the only breed of dog that has an all-white coat which, along with their curly hair and black eyes and nose, gives them an incredibly unique and adorable look. Havaneses are very sociable and outgoing, making them a great companion for families and adventurous activities.
The Havanese coat is lovely and has many interesting characteristics. Firstly, the hairs are silky, long and wavy, with a texture that is often compared to cotton candy. It's also very fine, so the dog does not require frequent brushing nor does it need to be trimmed as often, allowing for more time to be spent playing and running around. Additionally, the coat ranges in many colors, from white to cream, chocolate, and red.
Generally speaking, Havanese do best on a diet of high-quality dry kibble, supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables. Be sure to select a food specifically formulated for small dogs, as Havanese cannot digest certain large-breed dog food. You should also supplement your pet's diet with puppy food if they are a puppy, or senior food if they are aged 7 or older. In addition to their regular diet, it's important to provide them with plenty of water and regular exercise in order to stay healthy and happy.
Preparing your home for a new Havanese will require some upfront effort, but it'll be worth it for your pup's long-term comfort and wellbeing! Start by puppy-proofing the house; move any hazardous items out of your pup's reach, such as breakables, electrical cords, and unsecured trash cans. Be sure to invest in pet-safe cleaning products, toys, chews, and beds. It's also important to establish a routine for feeding, potty breaks, and play sessions to ensure proper potty training and socialization.
The size of a Havanese puppy can vary depending on several factors, including their parents' size and the diet that they are being fed. Generally, Havanese puppies reach their adult size between 8 and 11 inches, weighing around 7 to 13 pounds. This does not mean that all Havanese are the same size, as individual dogs can and do vary in their size. If you are considering a Havanese puppy, it is important to talk to their breeder to get an idea of the size range of the pup that you are interested in.
Generally speaking, Havanese dogs should get roughly an hour of walking each day. This can be broken up into several short sessions over the course of the day, however, it's important that your furry family member gets sufficient daily exercise. Ensuring that your Havanese receives the right amount of exercise allows them to expend their energy in a healthy manner, which can lead to better behavior and overall health. Getting your Havanese out and about – whether it's a half-hour walk or a leisurely stroll – is a great way to bond and establish a loving relationship.
Havaneses are one of the most popular toy-sized dog breeds and are often considered excellent family pets. They are known for their intelligence and endearing personalities, which makes them great companions for adults and children alike. They have an even temperament and a loyal, affectionate nature, which gives them the ability to fit into most households quite easily. Havaneses are independent but they do thrive off of human interaction, making them an ideal pet for families who enjoy spending time with their pets. They're sociable, loyal, and entertaining, and they love to cuddle.
Training a Havanese can be a wonderful experience, although it can also be quite challenging. The best way to ensure success and foster a strong bond between you and your pup is to begin their training as early as possible. A good place to start is to teach them the basics sit, stay, come, and heel. With positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, dogs learn better and faster. Consistency is key you should be repetitive in your commands and daily training.
