Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, friendly breed of dog originating from the Caribbean island of Cuba. Bred to be companion dogs, Havanese are intelligent, playful and have a lively, happy personality. They have a long, poofy single coat of silky hair that requires regular brushing and combing. Havanese are a loving breed and thrive off lots of human interaction. They are known to pick one person in their "pack" (humans or other pets) as their loyal companion. They make good watchdogs, but aren't known to bark excessively.
Havaneses, or also known as Havana Silk Dogs, are indeed a non-shedding breed. As such, they are considered a hypoallergenic breed, which means that they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Due to their length of coat and limited shedding capabilities, they do require more grooming than other breeds and frequent brushings, regular baths and haircuts are recommended. They are also great for people with allergies or sensitivities to pet dander, so the owner need not worry about the pet causing allergies.
It is important to feed your Havanese a high quality diet with all of the necessary nutrients and vitamins he or she needs to stay healthy. Depending on the age and size of your Havanese, you should be feeding a diet that is specifically tailored for small breeds. You should always check the label of the food to make sure it is appropriate for your pup. Make sure to explore the various food offerings available, as different foods contain different ingredients. Additionally, you may want to look into supplementing with additional vitamins and minerals if necessary.
Preparing your home for a new Havanese pup is an important step for ensuring a safe and happy environment for both you and your new companion. Begin by puppy proofing each room in your house by removing or placing items out of reach of your pup. Check for any sharp objects, small items that can be swallowed, and electrical cords that could pose a hazard. Make sure you have an area of your home set just for your pup with a comfortable bed, food and water bowls, and chew toys.
Havaneses, often referred to as the "Copper Ball of Fluff," are known to stand between nine and 11 inches in height and typically weigh between seven and 13 pounds when fully grown. As with most breeds of dogs, Haavanese vary slightly in size, but generally most mature at between seven and 12 pounds. As a toy breed, the Havaneses are considered relatively small, although their owners often adore their big personalities that can fill any room.
Havaneses are active dogs and require a good amount of exercise to stay healthy. Depending on the age and health of the Havaneses, they may need around a half an hour to an hour of physical activity per day. Moderate walks or jogs, play sessions, and interactive games like fetch or tug-of-war are all great ways to get the exercise these lively pets need. Havaneses also love swimming, which is a great way to give them some exercise and also help cool them down as they can’t pant as effectively as other breeds.
Havaneses are well suited for families with children due to their cheerful, playful, and intelligent nature. This breed loves to be around people, especially children, and actively seeks attention and affection. They are very loyal and protective of their families, which makes them great watchdogs, yet they are not aggressive by nature. The Havaneses' love of games and their intelligence help ensure that children have a patient, perceptive companion who loves to be active. Not only will your children have a best friend, as they get older they can teach the dog tricks as well.
Training a Havanese requires patience and consistency. You should begin training early with basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come. Be sure to reinforce good behavior and provide lots of positive reinforcement with treats, petting, and verbal praise whenever your Havanese follows directions. Start training in a place with few distractions, such as an enclosed backyard, so that the pup has your undivided attention and is better able to focus. Once your pup has mastered commands in that environment, begin introducing distractions and gradually increase their complexity.
