Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, lovable dog native to Cuba. They are incredibly friendly and make excellent family dogs. As the national dog of Cuba, they have been bred for centuries to be both friendly and affectionate. They have a silky white coat with a slight wave, and typically weigh anywhere from seven to thirteen pounds. Their perky intelligence and eagerness to please makes them very adaptable to a variety of different training techniques. While they love to play, they are also content to just cuddle up on your lap.
The Havanese coat is quite special. It is long, soft and has a silky texture to it. It looks similar to human hair and can range in a variety of different colours such as white, black, cream, sable and gold. The breed standard requires a slight curl or wave in the hair, but it doesn't tend to get matted and therefore doesn't require much brushing. The coat can be prone to some tangles, so occasional brushing would still be advised.
Havaneses should be fed a healthy diet that is filled with protein and nutrients that are important for maintaining their physical and mental wellbeing. It is recommended that these canines consume mostly high-quality dry dog food that has been specifically designed to meet their needs. Generally speaking, Havaneses will benefit from meals that are high in meat-based proteins, such as chicken, fish, or lamb.
Becoming the best puppy parent before your Havanese arrives is possible by preparing ahead of time. Conduct research not only on the breed itself, but on potty training, proper nutrition, and socialization. Consider investing in puppy obedience classes to ensure your pup is well mannered and that you understand basic concepts of building a strong bond. Have the necessities ready such as crates, food, water bowls, toys and quality puppy food. When your pup does arrive, establish a feeding and sleeping routine so your pup can easily adjust and know when it's for playtime and when it's for rest.
Havaneses, also known as the Bichon-Habanero or the Cuban Bichon, are small but sturdy dogs. It is a popular companion pet, ranging from 7-13 inches in height and 8-18 pounds in weight. The bigger the dog is within this range, the more potential health concerns they may have. Generally, Havaneses tend to be most comfortable and healthy in the 8-11 inch-high range and 12-15 pound weight level. Also, they enjoy activity, so they should be taken out for walks and other types of exercise.
Walking your Havanese is a great way to provide physical and mental stimulation, as well as promote healthy bones and joints. Ideally, you should aim for approximately 30 to 45 minutes of exercise a day. For shorter walks, aim for at least twice a day to provide ample opportunity for your Havanese to explore new places and experiences. Longer walks are great for burning off excess energy. However, it's important to consider the individual needs of your Havanese. If your Havanese is older, for example, shorter, more frequent walks may be more suitable.
Havaneses make great family dogs! They are generally very friendly, affectionate and loyal, and great with children. They generally have an outgoing nature which makes them fun to be around. They’re also quite intelligent, and with proper training, can be obedient, playful, and a great addition to any family unit. They can be quite energetic, so providing sufficient exercise and daily walks is important for their health and wellbeing. Additionally, Havaneses do not need much grooming and tend to be quite easy to care for.
Training your Havanese should be a consistent, rewarding experience for both you and your pup. Start by laying out large areas like the living room so that your pup can run around and explore freely in a safe and secure environment. Then introduce basic commands such as "sit," "stay," and "come" using positive reinforcement. Utilize treats, toys, and even verbal rewards like your voice and praise when they complete commands correctly. It's also important to socialize your pup with other animals and people. You can do this gradually and safely by introducing smaller groups of people at a time.
