Questions & Answers
A Havanese is an adorable small dog originating from Cuba. Thought to have Arabian or Maltese roots, the Havanese is an intelligent, affectionate, and loyal breed. Typical of the Bichon family, Havanese can weigh anywhere from 7 to 13 pounds and have soft, silky coats of any color. They love to play and cuddle, and require lots of attention. Although they can be independent, they thrive off of being around their families; they're always happiest when they're with the people they love.
The Havanese is known for its long, wavy or curly coat that is of single layer and very soft to the touch. The coat can range from light tan to white or black, and some even have a mix of these colors. The coats can sometimes be either wiry or fluffy depending on the dog, and it is recommended to groom it every few months to keep it looking healthy and maintain its length. While the coat may appear high maintenance, it typically just requires brushing, combing, and occasional clipping to keep it looking its best.
Havaneses typically have nutritional needs similar to other breeds. They do, however, require a diet that is rich in protein and fats which are essential for maintaining their energy levels and overall health. Furthermore, their diet should be properly balanced with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to ensure optimal growth and development. Havaneses may also be more prone to stomach issues so it's important to keep an eye out for signs of indigestion, diarrhea, and vomiting, which can all be addressed by adjusting their diet accordingly.
Becoming a great puppy parent while you're waiting for your Havanese can be achieved by doing some research, talking to others who own Havanese puppies, and working on your own puppy parenting skills. Start by doing your research and learning as much as you can about the breed and their specific needs. Reach out to other Havanese puppy owners and ask them for advice on how to best care for their puppy. Additionally, you can start preparing a space for your puppy, creating a routine for them, and exploring positive reinforcement for training.
Havaneses typically come in different sizes ranging from very small (around 6–7 pounds or 2.7–3.2 kg) to medium-sized (around 10–12 pounds or 4.5–5.5 kg). Smaller Havaneses may be more suited for apartment living, while larger Havaneses might enjoy more space for running and playing. Size does depend on the individual traits of the particular breed, as every breed has different growth rates, bone structure and body mass. Therefore it is important to understand the specific breed's individual needs when considering the size.
How much daily exercise your Havanese needs depends largely on their current energy level and age. Generally, an adult Havanese should receive at least 30 minutes of physical activity and mental stimulation per day, while puppies should get even more. You could break this into two 15-minute walks around the block, with a few minutes after each walk to let them play and observe their surroundings. That being said, no two dogs are the same, so the amount of walking can vary.
Havaneses have a lot of qualities that make them great family dogs. Their small size means they can fit well into any size home, and their energetic personalities mean they love to be active. They are also incredibly smart, intelligent and obedient dogs, capable of picking up on basic commands quickly and following them faithfully. They are also incredibly resilient and are often able to handle stressful situations that other breeds may not be able to handle. Despite their small size, they are also known to be fierce protectors of their family unit.
Training a Havanese can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but it is important to understand that it is not necessarily an easy undertaking. As with any breed of dog, it requires commitment, consistency, and patience. Additionally, the Havanese breed is known to be especially sensitive and may require more focused attention, behavior modification, and patience than other breeds. Furthermore, the Havanese is a moderately active dog who needs daily exercise and mental stimulation, so it is helpful to have plenty of games and activities available to keep them occupied and encouraged to exercise.
