Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small and spirited breed of dog that have become increasingly popular all around the world. They are intelligent and alert, known for their endearing charisma. Fun facts about Havaneses include that their coat is non-shedding and hypoallergenic, so they make great companions for individuals with allergies. They are also very fond of lap-sitting and demonstrate an extreme loyalty and bond with their owners. Historically, the Havaneses breed originated in Cuba in the late 1800's and were initially bred asratters and lapdogs.
The Havanese coat is beautiful and stands out among other breeds. It is non-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them great companions for anyone with pet allergies. The coat is long and wavy, ranging in color from cream to black and even various shades of chocolate, red and sandy copper. The fur is cottony in texture and soft to the touch, making them an ideal lapdog for cuddling. They require regular brushing and periodic trips to the groomer to keep their coat looking well-maintained, but care for the next is relatively minimal.
While the dietary needs of any individual dog are specific and unique to that particular dog, Havaneses typically need a diet that is high in protein and fat and low in carbohydrates. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is recommended to help keep their coat in optimal condition, while they also require vitamin E, chondroitin and glucosamine in order to maintain joint health. As with all dogs, owners should feed a balanced diet, with food that has no artificial preservatives or sweeteners, since these can be potentially health-damaging to Havaneses.
Before you bring your new Havanese home, it is important to prepare your home for their arrival. Be sure to block off dangerous areas or any other hazardous items within the home from your pup. Put away any breakable items and make sure that items on shelves and countertops are secure. Clean your home of any dirt and debris before your pup arrives. Have an area for food, treats, and toys available to your pup when they arrive. It's also important to create a specific place for your pup to sleep, such as a crate or bed.
Havaneses typically have a small stature, with a height of only 8 to 11 inches and a weight of around 7 to 13 pounds. On average, Havaneses are considered a toy breed and are the smallest among the Bichon family. Even so, and despite their relatively small size, their personality is big, and their devotion to their owners is impossible to measure! They are full of enthusiasm, energy and charm that make them a wonderful, playful companion.
Havaneses are a very active and lively breed, and as such, they require plenty of exercise. On average, they need at least 1 hour of physical activity per day to stay healthy and happy. This could include walks, jogging, games of fetch and even swimming. Varying their exercise routine will help keep them stimulated and interested in the activities. Additionally, it's important that your Havaneses have access to plenty of mental enrichment, such as puzzle toys or agility courses, as they are very intelligent and need to be kept entertained to stay active and alert.
Generally, Havaneses have a great affinity for children, making them an excellent choice for family pets. They tend to be gentle and full of love, making them very patient and attentive when it comes to interacting with kids. These dogs are intelligent, so they can easily be trained to be safe with children and they also love to play and be part of the family environment. With consistent training and supervision, Havaneses can actually become playmates with kids, keeping them entertained while teaching boundaries and manners.
Training a Havanese can be both a rewarding and easy experience, depending on the individual temperament of the dog and the consistency and patience of the trainer. Havanese, as a breed, are intelligent, sociable and responsive, which makes them relatively easy to train. Furthermore, they have a sincere desire to please their owners, so with structured training, consistent rewards and positive reinforcement, even a novice owner can successfully teach the basics to their Havanese.
