Questions & Answers
The Havaneses is a small dog breed that is a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Cuban Cocker Spaniel. They are generally considered to be a very friendly and loyal breed of dog. Havaneses have thick and white fur that usually doesn't require much grooming and they have an eternity puppy look due to their playful and sweet expressions. They are generally active, loving and gentle and can make very entertaining and loyal companions. Havaneses usually have short attention span which requires daily exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom.
Yes, Havaneses are a non-shedding breed of dog. This means that on average, you won't have as much hair around your home as you would with a shedding breed. Some individuals may shed more than others, but overall, Havaneses are a great breed for those who don't want to contend with excessive shedding. In addition to the low shedding, their coats require minimal grooming, making them a great breed for those who don't have the time or resources to keep up with the grooming needs of high-maintenance breeds.
Havaneses eat a high-quality diet formulated to meet the nutritional needs of this small breed of dog. Dry kibble is generally the base, supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy treats. Some owners feed their Havaneses a cooked diet, such as lean meats, rice, boiled eggs and bland vegetables. Meat should represent no more than 20-25% of the diet, with starch taking up no more than 20-30%. Grain-free and low-allergen varieties are usually best for this breed.
Before your new Havanese puppy arrives, there are a few things you should do to prepare your home. First, puppy-proof your home. This means picking up any valuables, heat-sensitive items and slips/trip hazards, like small wires and cords. Next, create a comfortable space of their own. This could be a designated space in a room, like their own bed and toys. It may even be beneficial to have a ‘safe space’ like a playpen or small room where they can retreat if needed.
Size is an approximate measurement for purebred Havanese dogs, so it is impossible to say with certainty exactly how big your puppy will be as an adult. However, Havanese puppies tend to weigh between 7-13 pounds when fully grown and are typically between 8-11 inches in height at the shoulder. On average, a Havanese will reach their full adult size between 9-12 months. There can be some variations in size for this breed, with some individuals remaining smaller, and some slightly larger than the average range.
Generally speaking, Havaneses need considerable exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. A few walks around the block per day should at least provide a good source of physical activity, along with some interesting human interaction and contact with their natural environment. For younger Havaneses, an outdoor play activity such as a game of fetch can help to keep them agile and alert. Older Havaneses may respond better to short walks around the house or backyard, instead of more active forms of exercise such as running.
Havaneses have a friendly and engaging personality that makes them great family dogs. They're very smart and learn quickly, so they can pick up on patterns and quickly adapt to their environment. When paired with children, their patience and attentiveness make them an excellent companion. They're good-natured and content to be around kids playing and making noise, plus they're small enough to take away with you, so no trips to the park are off limits.
Training a Havanese can be a rewarding experience; however, it can require patience and consistency. Like with any other breed, you must establish a schedule and be dedicated to it. It requires positive reinforcement and praise to help your Havanese learn quickly. Rewards such as treats, positive words, and playtime can be used to reinforce good behavior. Socialization is also important; exposing your Havanese to different people, animals and environments can help them learn what is socially acceptable and what isn't.
