Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a unique breed of dogs that originated in Cuba. They are known for their playful, loyal and affectionate personalities, and they often make excellent companions. They are intelligent, alert and bold, and they respond well to training. They have a double coat made of a soft, long, wavy outer layer and a shorter, dense undercoat, with colors ranging from white to black and tan. They typically weigh 8-12 lbs when fully grown, and reach heights of 8-9 inches.
The Havanese coat is lush and luxurious! The medium-sized dog sports a long double-coat with a dense undercoat and a distinctive "halo" of curls on the head and neck. The fur is usually a combination of straight, wavy and curly sections, giving the breed its unique look. Its outercoat is moderately long, silky and fluffy, while the undercoat is thick and wooly. Coat colors can be a combination of white, cream, gold and chocolate, with many more shades and combinations possible.
Havaneses are small breed dogs that need a specific balanced diet that meets their unique nutritional needs. A quality dry kibble dog food should be the foundation of their diet, as this type of food contains all the necessary vitamins, minerals and proteins for a balanced nutrition. Add-ons that might be good for the Havaneses diet include lean meats such as chicken, boiled eggs, cooked carrots, green beans, yoghurt and cucumber.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you wait for your Havanese can be a rewarding process! The first step is to do your research. With responsible animal ownership comes the need to be knowledgeable on topics like health care, nutrition, mental stimulation, and training. Reading books, researching online, and speaking with a responsible breeder or veterinarian can help you to get the most accurate information so that you are as prepared as possible. Additionally, make sure your home is prepared and safe for your pup.
Havaneses, also known as Cuban Bichon, are a small breed that typically stay under 10 pounds in weight. However, they can range in size according to the American Kennel Club and can reach up to 18 pounds depending on their parents' size, diet and exercise habits. On average, most Havaneses tend to weigh from 7 to 13 pounds. If their diets do not include nutritional supplementing, their ideal weight likely tops out closer to 12 pounds.
Havaneses are an active breed that need daily exercise to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. An adult Havaneses requires around 45 minutes of active play and exercising every day. This exercise could include activities such as a good walk, going for regular romps in the park, playing a game of fetch and running around with their owner. If possible, it is best to alternate the type of exercise too as this can be stimulating and help keep the Havaneses feeling youthful and active. Moreover, regular exercise also helps to build strong muscles and keep the Havaneses fit and agile.
Absolutely! Havaneses make excellent family dogs, as they are great with kids, affectionate, and usually remain close to their primary family. They boast an impressive aptitude for learning as they are very intelligent and can learn commands and tricks quickly. This breed is also incredibly sociable, so they often do well with other dogs and animals in the house.
Training your Havanese requires patience and consistency. Start by teaching basic commands such as "sit", "stay", "come", and "heel", using positive reinforcement and treats. Make sure to give your Havanese plenty of praise and verbal encouragement. Use creative methods such as tipping your pet's bowl or hall to get their attention. You may need to provide reinforcement by rewarding desired behaviors. Additionally, you can incorporate toys or games into your training routine, such as teaching your Havanese to learn their name, fetch or play hide-and-seek.
