Questions & Answers
Havaneses are known for their intelligence and friendliness. They were created in the 1950s by cross-breeding Bichon Frises and Poodles, so they combine the playful nature of a Poodle with the adaptability and intelligence of a Bichon Frise. They are relatively low-shedding, they are highly active and love to play, and they are excellent watchdogs due to their alertness and loyalty. They are also great as therapy dogs, and their calm, gentle natures make them great for families.
The Havanese coat can vary in color, but it's most commonly a mix of white, apricot and silver. The coat is double layered and very soft to the touch. The Havanese require regular brushing in order to maintain their healthy coat, and to avoid the coat becoming too long and matted. The breed typically has long, wavy hair and a range of colors, including red, gold, chocolate, black and white.
Havaneses have a few dietary needs that should be taken into consideration. Generally, they require a high quality, nutritious diet suitable for small breeds. They should not be overfed as they are prone to obesity and may suffer from digestive issues due to their smaller size. Eating smaller meals several times a day can help prevent bloat, which is a medical condition that can be dangerous for Havaneses. It's especially important to feed them unprocessed, natural ingredients with limited amounts of grains, corn, and wheat.
Becoming the best puppy parent while awaiting your Havanese can be accomplished by doing research and preparing your home before your new puppy arrives. Start by researching appropriate training methods, diet, and veterinary care such as spaying/neutering and yearly vaccinations. Additionally, create a comfortable safe environment in your home for the puppy, take time to puppy-proof your home and yard, and begin to gather the necessary supplies for your new puppy's arrival. The more you learn and the more prepared you are, the better puppy parent you will become.
It can be difficult to predict definitively how big your Havanese puppy will be as an adult because their size is affected by a number of factors. As a general guideline, however, Havanese puppies are typically 8-11 inches tall when fully grown, and their weight can range from 7-13 pounds. Of course, it's important to keep in mind that each Havanese puppy is different, and you may see variations from this size range in your own pup. It's also helpful to remember that smaller puppies often grow more slowly than larger ones.
Havaneses are energetic dogs that need a lot of exercise. On average, a Havaneses should get one hour of physical activity per day to keep them healthy and happy. Regular exercise and mental stimulation are important for healthy Havaneses. Depending on the individual, the optimal amount of exercise will vary. Generally, dogs should have enough aerobic exercise to maintain muscle tone and strength, with activities such as short walks, free play, or short jogging sessions.
In general, Havaneses are friendly, docile and intelligent dogs, making them great companions, especially around children and other pets. They are eager to please, loyal and affectionate towards their families, including kids. Also, they do incredibly well with children, since they are patient and gentle, rarely showing aggression, so the risk of them biting is quite low. In addition, they are easy to train and housebreak, making them a great choice for households with children.
Training your Havanese requires consistency and patience. Start by introducing basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'come', and 'down'. You can begin teaching your Havanese these commands by using positive reinforcement. Offer rewards such as praise, treats, and hugs when your pup responds correctly. As your pup begins to master these commands, gradually increase the complexity of the commands you are teaching. Introduce new concepts such as 'leave it' or 'drop it' and train them in a variety of locations.
