Questions & Answers
Havaneses, also known as Cuban or Bichon Havanese, are small dogs with long and thick coats. They are the only breed of dog native to Cuba, descended from a cross between a Miniature Poodle and a Blanquito de la Habana. They have a positive, friendly attitude and greatly enjoy human interaction. Fun facts about Havaneses include: they can play up to five sports, they're recognized by the American Kennel Club, their coat is odorless and hypoallergenic, and they rarely bark.
The Havanese is a small, affectionate breed of dog recognized by their long, lush coat. They come in a variety of colors, including white, black, silver, cream, golden, and even parti-colors. The coat of a Havanese is soft, silky and grows in a single layer as opposed to double-coated breeds. Their coat should never need trimming, but regular brushing and bathing is necessary. Since they do not have an undercoat, the Havanese does not shed and is a good choice for allergy sufferers.
Havanese should primarily be fed a high-quality dry kibble that has been specifically formulated for smallto medium-sized dogs. You can supplement their kibble with human foods such as cooked veggies and fruits, lean meats, and yogurt, but you should avoid grains, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic and other fatty or sugary items. When introducing new foods, you should always do so gradually and start with small amounts, monitoring your dog's reaction. Be sure to avoid giving large portions, as Havanese are very small dogs and can easily become overweight.
Being the best puppy parent starts before you bring home your Havanese. Take the time to do some research and learn about their breed and their needs. Look for helpful tips on how to introduce your pet to their new home and establish boundaries for them so that they understand their place. Make sure to allot enough time each day to provide love and attention, such as training and play. Find appropriate toys and treats, along with appropriate forms of discipline such as Not-Okay and redirecting habits when needed. When you get your Havanese home, have patience and don't rush things.
It's hard to determine with certainty how big your Havanese puppy will be when it reaches adulthood. As a rough guide, these lively and friendly dogs typically reach an average adult height of between 8 and 11 inches and an average adult weight of 7-13 pounds. Size can be affected by factors such as diet and genetics, so you should consult with your vet to make sure your pup is receiving the best care for their specific needs. Nevertheless, the Havanese breed is generally a small to medium sized breed, meaning your pup is likely to remain small throughout their life.
It depends on your Havanese' individual needs, as well as your own schedule. Generally speaking, your Havanese should be getting at least 30 minutes of walking per day. This should be a combination of physical exercise and mental stimulation, so try to find activities like leisurely walks, agility courses, and recreational fetch. It's important that you warm up and cool down your Havanese before and after each walking session to prevent injury. Exercising your Havanese daily is an essential part of keeping them in optimal physical and mental health.
Absolutely! Havaneses are some of the most loving and loyal breeds. They tend to be highly adaptable and can fit into nearly any family dynamic. Forming close bonds with humans is something this breed is especially famous for, so you can be sure that your Havaneses will become a member of the family. They have also been known to be good with children, making them an ideal choice for families. In addition, Havaneses tend to be quite intelligent, which makes them easy to train. All this makes them an excellent choice for a family pet!
Training a Havanese is an enjoyable challenge, offering much mental stimulation to its handler. That said, Havanese are quite intelligent and learn very quickly, so the way they pick up the basics of behaviors like sit, stay, heel, and come make the overall training process much easier. Of course, the breed is renowned for their mischievous—yet endearing—nature, so you will still need to commit to consistent reinforcement of the learned behaviors in order to prevent the pooch from slipping into bad habits.
