Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small, intelligent, and playful breed of dog from Cuba that has been described as a “little white lion.” They are a part of the Bichon family, which includes Bichon Frises, Malteses, and Coton de Tulears. As a companion breed, Havaneses love spending time with their humans and are often considered one of the most loyal breeds. They are also extremely loyal and protective of their owners and need daily exercise, mental stimulation, and plenty of affection.
Havaneses are considered to be hypoallergenic since their single-layer coats are low-shedding, but it may vary from dog to dog. Havaneses don't typically produce a lot of dander, which is often the cause of allergies, and they don't shed nearly as much as other breeds. While it is still possible to be allergic to a Havaneses, many people with allergies are able to live with a Havaneses without much of an issue.
Feeding your Havanese a high-quality diet is key to keeping them healthy. Abundant with protein and low in fat, you should look for food that contains premium natural ingredients such as chicken, lamb, and beef, as well as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Additionally, food designed specifically for small dogs, like Havanese, can be beneficial in promoting a healthy digestive system and providing a balanced diet. Also, check out your vet's recommendation to ensure your pet is getting all of the nutrients they need for optimal health.
Preparing for a new Havanese puppy is exciting, but also involves a great deal of responsibility. Firstly, provide the best environment for your new pup. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies, including food and water dishes, a bed, a crate, training items like treats and toys, a collar and leash, and grooming items. Next, familiarize yourself with the breed and their needs. Research the breed's exercise needs and dietary requirements in order to keep them healthy and active. Create a schedule for activities, playtime and training so that your pup has a regular routine.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on several factors, such as diet, exercise, and genetics. Generally, male Havanese dogs will weigh between seven and thirteen pounds and stand at eight to eleven inches at the shoulder. Female Havanese usually weigh between six and ten pounds and stand between seven and ten inches. While size is by no means an exact science, this range of sizes can be used as a general guide. Of course, your pup's diet and exercise regimen, as well as any inherited factors, will all contribute to the size they reach when fully grown.
An ideal daily walk for your Havanese should be about 20 to 30 minutes. Remember to walk your Havanese safely and on a leash. Sticking to shorter, more often walks is beneficial for active breeds like the Havanese due to their natural energy levels. It will allow your pup to stay healthy, burn off excess energy and make it easier for everyday obedience and training. Vary the routine a bit as well, and make sure to provide multiple potty breaks throughout your walks.
Havaneses are beloved family pets as they have been bred for generations as companion dogs. They tend to have an elegant, playful, and loyal temperament, which make them an ideal family canine companion. They are also highly adaptable and can excel in a wide range of environments, whether it be an active home with children or a more relaxed one with just adults. The breed is also noted for its intelligence and is highly trainable, even into adulthood. Additionally, Havaneses are generally good with other dogs, cats, and even strangers.
Training your Havanese starts with building a strong, trusting relationship with your pup. A good approach is to create a positive environment where your furry companion can learn. That can be accomplished by rewarding good behavior with treats, verbal praise, and petting. It's also important to establish yourself as the leader, with patience and consistency being key. You'll also want to ensure your pup is well-socialized, by introducing them to other animals in a safe, controlled environment, and teaching them the basics of obedience, such as sit and stay at an early age.
