Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of small dogs that are known for being friendly and loyal companions. They are an intelligent breed, making them great family pets as they can be easily trained. They were developed in Cuba and have become popular throughout the world. Havaneses have a thick, silky coat that can be trimmed in a variety of styles for a more individualized look. They have large, droopy eyes and their head is slightly rounded in shape. The breed usually weighs between seven and twelve pounds and may have a lifespan of up to fifteen years.
The Havanese's coat is absolutely beautiful and unique! With a long, silky texture, it may be slightly wavy or curly, generally reaching to the floor. The coat is also thicker than other breeds, making it a great insulation layer that keeps the Havanese warm in even the most chilly weather. The Havanese's coat is hypoallergenic, meaning it doesn't shed much and offers a great option for those with allergies.
Havaneses are an active toy breed and get most of their nutrients from a balanced diet of high-quality, age-appropriate kibble – tailored to their specific size, weight, and energy needs. The kibble should provide the right mix of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. It’s essential that Havaneses receive the right kind of nutrition to maintain a healthy weight and to build the muscles they need for the activities they love.
Start by giving your home an overall deep cleaning. Your Havanese might be small, but don’t forget that they are still dogs and will need a safe and comfortable environment. Make sure hazardous items such as cleaners, medications, and other chemicals are out of reach. Make sure to set aside a specific spot for your puppy’s food and water, where they can eat in peace. It would also be helpful to invest in some training materials, like a leash, training toys, treats, and a crate.
The size of a Havanese puppy is dependent on his or her genetics and the amount of food, exercise and love that they receive. Generally, Havanese puppies mature to a height of 8–11 inches (20–28 cm) and a weight of 4–7 pounds (2–3 kg). Depending on their genetics, some puppies may be slightly larger or smaller. Additionally, Havanese puppies are known to have long and silky coats that require brushing and regular grooming to remain healthy and beautiful.
An ideal amount of daily walking for a Havanese would be around 20-30 minutes per day. However, it is important to adjust this amount based on the individual pet's age and ability level. Puppies and senior pets may need less than the suggested 20-30 minutes, while otherwise healthy adult dogs benefit from regular exercise in the form of a daily walk. Walking your Havanese for even shorter periods of time (15 minutes or so) has mental and physical health benefits too. Remember to monitor your pet's health and adjust the frequency and duration of your walks accordingly.
Absolutely! Havaneses make wonderful companion animals for families with kids of all ages. They are incredibly friendly, sociable, and intelligent, which makes them great playmates and excellent guardians for little ones. In general, Havaneses are very well-mannered and calm, and with patience and consistency, you can easily train them to stay away from behaviors such as nipping and jumping with children. Havaneses also typically respond well to positive reinforcement, making it easy to instill good behavior in the breed.
Training a Havanese can be a rewarding experience, but it does take dedication and patience. To begin, make sure your pup has had a vet check-up to ensure he has no underlying medical issues inadvertently inhibiting your training. After this is complete, ensure you and your pup have quality one-on-one bonding time – during this time, offer treats in small increments for obedience and set him up for success by keeping distractions and other pets away. As he learns the basics, use a variety of positive reinforcement methods such as verbal praise, playtime and treats to reward desired behaviors.
