Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of small dogs known for their charming personality and playful disposition. They are considered a toy breed and typically weigh anywhere from 7-13 pounds. The breed's signature white coat is not a result of selective breeding but rather a genetic mutation that occurred in a litter of Spanish dogs. One of the most distinctive traits of the Havaneses is the fact that they are born with both a long and short ear the long ear is meant to sea the air for sound, while the short ear filters out loud, distracting noises.
The Havanese coat is a soft, silky single-layer of fur, typically long and wavy. It is most commonly seen in white or cream colors, but can be found in other colors like sable, chocolate, tricolor, and black. The fur is wavy, however, it tends to be less curly than that of other breeds. This breed sheds very little, but regular brushing and grooming is important in order to keep the hairs long and healthy-looking.
Havaneses are intelligent and active dogs, so they need to eat a balanced, nutritious diet that is tailored to their size and activity level. Many owners, however, find it difficult to determine exactly what will be the best food for their beloved pet. Generally, a good diet for a Havaneses will contain plenty of protein, moderate to high levels of fat, some complex carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals. When it comes to protein, a Havaneses needs a variety of sources, such as chicken, beef, fish, and eggs.
Becoming the best puppy parent while you wait for your Havanese is an excellent way to prepare for your pup's arrival. Start by understanding the Havaneses' needs, including health, nutrition, exercise, grooming, and mental stimulation. You can research reputable breeders, speak with other Havaneses owners, and make veterinary appointments in advance. Additionally, ensure your home has all the equipment and supplies your pup will need, like a crate, food and water bowls, toys, leashes or harnesses, and proper bedding.
Havaneses are mid-sized dogs standing 8-11 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing in at 7-13 pounds upon full growth. They do not come in different sizes; all of these dogs have the general size and proportions listed above, regardless of the gender or lineage. Their coats are hypoallergenic and that, along with their small size, make them ideal for many families, especially those with smaller homes or limited outdoor space. As a bonus, Havaneses are also an easy breed to groom, and they require minimal combing and brushing.
An ideal amount of walking for a Havanese would depend on the age and activity level of your dog. Adult Havanese generally need around 30 minutes of walking per day to stay healthy, stay trim, and stay stimulated. Puppies will need less since they usually have shorter attention spans, less stamina, and are growing. To help your pup stay active, take two to three walks of 15 to 20 minutes each throughout the day; aim to provide at least this amount of exercise every day.
Havaneses are an excellent breed for family life. They are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and sociability. They are great companions and make wonderful additions to a family. Havaneses excel at being great family dogs due to their friendly and gentle nature. They are never aggressive and enjoy being around people, even kids. In addition to being great family companions, Havaneses do well in a variety of activities, such as agility and performance trials, and make loyal service dogs. They are easily house trained, have low exercise needs, and get along well with most animals.
Havaneses are known to be extremely smart. Their intelligence has been recognized and celebrated in multiple scientific articles and books worldwide, even being compared to the smartest dog breeds. Their being classified as "intelligence dogs" has been attributed to their high level of activity and intelligence, its capacity to recognize, as well as its response to commands given. It is also noted that its docility and adaptability allow it to learn behaviors quickly. Besides its intelligence, the Havaneses is considered to be a great companion dog, used in therapy and sports disciplines.
