Questions & Answers
Havanese dogs are a unique breed with a rich history. They originated in Cuba and were originally used by the aristocracy as a companion dog. They are the national dog of Cuba and are considered both a toy and companion dog. Bred for their intelligence, the Havanese is incredibly smart and loves to learn new tricks. In addition, they are playful, happy, and lovely to be around due to their kind personalities. Havanese also possess distinctive coat traits and can range in size from 8 pounds up to 18 pounds.
The American Kennel Club recognizes the Havaneses as a hypoallergenic breed, which means they tend to cause fewer allergies. However, it's impossible to guarantee that any breed will be completely hypoallergenic; there are still people who may have allergies to these dogs. This breed does not typically shed much and their fur is often short and tight so dander levels are typically lower, making them less likely to be a trigger for those with allergies. Their coats may need occasional brushing, but no trimming is required.
Havaneses enjoy a variety of food items including fruits, vegetables, grain, and meat. They also consume a wide range of dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, and occasional treats like fresh fish, rice and poultry. Commonly found in their diets are recognizable staples like rice, corn, beans, and potatoes, as well as important proteins such as grasshoppers, worms, small birds, lizards, frogs, and insects. In addition, nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, and macadamia nuts can become part of their regular meals.
Being a great puppy parent while you wait for your Havanese begins before you even get your pup. Research the breed and learning about their traits, needs and behaviors. Familiarize yourself with puppy-specific training techniques and commands. Make sure your home is prepared and dog-proofed. Talk to your vet about any questions you have regarding the puppy's health and the best food to feed. Once you get the pup, spend as much quality time with them as possible, encouraging them to learn and bonding with them. Make sure to handle them gently, building trust and love.
Havanese come in two sizes: Standard and Mini. A Standard Havanese typically weighs between 8 and 13 pounds, and their body length measures 11 to 16 inches. Meanwhile, a Mini Havanese typically weighs between 5 and 8 pounds, and their body length measures 9 to 12 inches. Generally speaking, the Standard Havanese has a full, medium length coat, while a Mini Havanese has a short, fluffy coat. Depending on the hereditary lines in your havanese, the sizing may vary slightly, however this is a reasonable guide for size expectations.
Havaneses have a moderate energy level and need a moderate amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. This could mean anything from daily walks and frequent outdoor time, to puppy classes, agility training, or playtime in the backyard. It is important to avoid over-exerting them, but make sure they get enough physical and mental stimulation. If your Havaneses seems to be having a lot of extra energy, consider enrolling them in activities that provide some physical and mental challenges. With their friendly nature, they consistently do well in obedience and agility courses.
Absolutely! Havaneses are incredibly loyal, loving, and sweet-natured dogs that make wonderful family companions. They are devoted to their owners and thrive when surrounded by people, making them ideal family dogs. Havaneses are also known to be smart and easy to train, so they can learn most house rules quickly and easily. They are low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs, making them a good choice for those with allergies.
Training a Havanese requires consistency, patience, and lots of loving reinforcement. Start by establishing yourself as the leader and determining the rules, expectations, and boundaries. Create a peaceful atmosphere and clearly communicate to your pup through voice, touch, and eye contact. To get started, choose which commands or tricks you want your pup to learn and practice them with short and frequent sessions. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats or verbal praise, to encourage your pup's behavior. Be sure to take plenty of breaks and end the sessions on a positive note.
