Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small toy-sized dog breed with origins in Cuba. This breed is friendly and loyal, making them popular as companion dogs. The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and measures 8.5 to 12.5 inches at the shoulder. They have a luxurious and soft-to-the-touch coat and come in a variety of colors, including black, cream, and silver. They are active little dogs and require daily exercise, although they are well-suited to living in an apartment.
Havaneses are considered a low-shedding breed, which may make them less likely to cause reactions in people who suffer from allergies. However, there is no guarantee that Havaneses are completely hypoallergenic as molecular particles from their skin, saliva, and/or dander can still be transmitted through the air and unknowingly create an allergic reaction. Due to their curly fur, some also believe that Havaneses may trap fewer irritants from the environment and therefore be less likely to cause an allergic reaction.
Havaneses are sometimes considered picky eaters. As a result, they tend to thrive on a diet consisting of small, balanced meals throughout the day. They enjoy a variety of healthy wet and dry doggy foods, as well as human foods such as fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, yogurt, and small amounts of cooked chicken and beef. Simple carbohydrates like grains and potatoes should be avoided, as they can cause nutritional deficiencies. Havaneses also get lots of energy from some fresh, cooked proteins such as boiled eggs and tuna.
If you are preparing to bring home a new Havanese pup, there are some important steps to take to make sure your home is ready. Make sure there are no hazards in the house that could hurt your pup like exposed wires and other sharp objects. Puppies have curious minds and are also very energetic, so you may also want to child-proof your home. However, since puppies may try to chew on items, some more puppy-proofing may be necessary.
Havaneses come in a variety of sizes, although the standard Havaneses size is medium. They can range from toy size (Yorkshire Terrier size) to miniature (1-2kg/ 2-4lbs) size to a normal size of 3-5kg/ 6-10lbs. Additionally, there is the ‘tiny’ size which is usually 1-2kg/ 2-4lbs and a ‘giant size’ which is 5-8kg/ 10-18lbs.
Absolutely! The Havaneses is an incredibly active breed, known for their lively, energetic and happy personality. While they generally only require around 30 minutes of energy-releasing exercise a day, they can be prone to excessive barking and chewing if not given enough ways to expend their energy. They especially thrive on play and activities outdoors that are both mentally and physically stimulating, such as a game of fetch or a chance to chase after a toy or a Frisbee. In addition to physical activity, Havaneses also enjoy stimulating their minds with interactive activities like agility courses.
Yes, Havaneses are typically great with kids! They are a small, playful, and loyal breed that make wonderful family pets due to their affectionate nature and outgoing temperament. Excellent with children, they are gentle, intelligent, and alert. These lapdogs are particularly well-suited to households with children, as they are often tolerant of the noises and bustle of a young family. As an added bonus, Havaneses prefer to linger static in the presence of young kids, rather than running around and getting underfoot.
Training a Havanese can be easy, depending on the patience and commitment of the owners. Understanding the breed and its individual temperaments, activity level, and breed characteristics is a great starting point. Additionally, finding the right tools, motivational techniques, and positive reinforcement will aid in successful training, making it easier and more enjoyable. Consistency and regular, structured training sessions are key, as Havanese can be quick learners and respond well to consistent commands and positive reinforcements.
